The 4- to 8-week online curricula empower teachers to help beginning and struggling readers overcome the ‘COVID-19 slide’

(Kaysville, UT) June 1, 2020 —Reading Horizons, a multisensory curriculum used to rapidly increase reading skills, has created a virtual summer reading program that helps students preview or review the foundational reading skills that have been proven to lead to reading success for beginning and struggling readers. Students who practice crucial phonics-based skills during the summer, will be prepared to stay on track with instruction during the coming school year.

Schools and districts can choose from a 4-, 6-, or 8-week program tailored to reading beginners, struggling readers, and English language learners. One program meets the needs of K–3rd-graders, and another supports 4th grade and up. Each is designed to engage students 3 to 6 days a week for 60 minutes a day. Educators can deliver the program virtually via any platform they prefer. There are even offline resources available to students with limited internet access.

“For more than 35 years, Reading Horizons has created and combined digital and classroom resources to provide engaging reading instruction based on the science of reading,” Reading Horizons’ CEO Tyson Smith said. “We have worked hard to adapt our resources into practical solutions for virtual learning because summer reading programs are crucial to limiting the impact of the ‘COVID-19 slide.’ Our program was created to help combat the academic effects that are heightened for those who are economically disadvantaged or who are already behind their peers in reading.”

The virtual summer reading programs include both free and paid tools. Educators and parents can access the free tools on the virtual classroom portal starting at the end of May 2020. Schools and districts can take advantage of the online software portion for assessment, progress-monitoring, student accountability, and additional student practice.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
