Top 10 Tips For Passing College Classes

You’ve been preparing for college for a while now, and the time is nearly here! While you may be worried about passing your college classes, you need not fret; passing classes is challenging but not impossible. Start now to get going in the right direction before the semester begins. Knowing what is expected of you is the first step in passing those classes. Once you know that, you just have to put into place some self-discipline and motivation. The following tips will help you ensure that you’ll find success in college.

  1.     Take the Right Classes

Choosing a major is a big decision, but it should be something you’re interested in. If you aren’t ready to choose a major, you still need to choose your individual classes. When making the selection,  choose classes that catch your interest. For example, if your university requires you to take a science class regardless of your major and you have to choose either biology or geology, taking the subject that interests you most out of the two will make it easier to put in the effort required for a good grade.

  1.     Go to Class

Sounds simple, right? Most classes don’t take attendance, but don’t be tricked into thinking you don’t need to be there. Going to class is the best way to secure a passing grade. While class materials and information may be available online, class is the only place that you’ll be able to ask questions about anything you don’t understand. You’ll also get more detailed information than what’s on a PowerPoint. Going to class is nonnegotiable. It’s what you’re there for.

  1.     Know the Syllabus

At the beginning of the semester, you’ll receive a syllabus from your classes. This is like a roadmap for that class. Instead of just waiting for assignments and tests as they come throughout the semester, make yourself familiar with the syllabus so you aren’t taken by surprise. You can also get a head start on projects or essays that you’ll have to do. This will relieve pressure and stress and you’ll be able to take your time making sure it’s perfect before you turn things in.

  1.     Take Notes by Hand

It may be faster and easier to type out your notes while you’re in class, but it’s not the best way to do it. If you’re on the computer, you’re also distracted by everything your computer has to offer – games, social media, funny cat videos. Instead, take notes the old-fashioned way: pen and paper. This will limit distractions for yourself and others. As a bonus, taking notes by hand is proven to be more helpful for remembering information and recalling it later on.

  1.     Don’t Wait to Work

There are a lot of demands for your attention in college. However, remember why you’re in college – to get that degree! Prioritize your schoolwork and get started on projects well before they are due. You’ll not only have less stress if you start earlier, but you’ll do better work and get a higher GPA. If you give yourself enough time, it’ll be good work, and not just “good enough.”

Concluding Thoughts

Passing college classes is a challenge. However, with the above tips you’ll be able to make it a bit less difficult than it is. It will take some work and practice, of course, but it will be all worth it when you have that diploma in hand!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
