Teachers Reveal Wildest Parent Requests: Grades, Time & More

Parents play a critical role in their child’s education, and most of them understand the importance of supporting their children’s learning journey. However, there are instances when some parents make outrageous requests that leave teachers in disbelief. Here are some of the most outrageous requests that teachers have received from parents:

1. Change the grade: One of the most common and outrageous requests is when parents ask teachers to change their child’s grade. Whether it’s because the child didn’t study enough or simply didn’t complete the assignment, some parents believe that the grade should be altered to benefit their child.

2. Provide extra time for assignments/exams: While accommodations for students with disabilities are essential, some parents take advantage of this by requesting extra time for their child’s assignments or exams without any legitimate reason. This puts unfair pressure on teachers and undermines the integrity of the education system.

3. Requesting priority treatment: Some parents believe that their child is more deserving of attention or resources than other students. They often request preferential treatment, such as more one-on-one time with the teacher or being placed in a higher-level class, regardless of the child’s abilities or efforts.

4. Dictating teaching methods: Teachers spend years honing their skills and expertise, understanding the best methods to engage and educate their students. However, some parents feel entitled to dictate how teachers should teach their child, often disregarding the proven methods and curriculum.

5. Asking for leniency in discipline: When their child is involved in disciplinary actions, some parents request leniency from teachers, even if the student has clearly violated rules or policies. They may argue that their child could do no wrong or place blame on other students, creating a challenging environment for teachers to maintain order and discipline.

It’s important to note that these are extreme cases and do not represent the majority of parents. Teachers work hard to provide quality education and support to their students, despite the challenges they face. Building a strong partnership between parents and teachers based on mutual respect and understanding is crucial for the success of students’ education.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
