University of Arizona Working to Get More Small-town Students to Apply

Tucson, Arizona – The University of Arizona (UA) is making a concerted effort to attract more students from small towns across the state and beyond. Recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by these students, the university has implemented a variety of initiatives to make the transition to college life smoother and more accessible.

“We want to ensure that students from all backgrounds, especially those from rural areas, have the chance to experience the transformative power of a UA education,” said [Name], [Title] at the UA. “These students bring a wealth of diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich our campus community.”

One key initiative is the “Rural Scholars Program,” which provides financial aid, academic support, and mentorship to students from underrepresented rural areas. The program aims to address the financial and academic barriers that often hinder rural students from pursuing higher education. It includes:

Financial Aid: Scholarships and grants specifically designed for rural students.

Academic Support: Supplemental tutoring, workshops, and guidance on navigating the university system.

Mentorship: Connecting rural students with mentors who have similar backgrounds and can offer guidance and support.

The university also recognizes the importance of cultural adjustment for rural students. The “Rural Student Success Center” provides a welcoming space where students can connect with peers from similar backgrounds, participate in cultural events, and access resources tailored to their needs.

“For many students from rural towns, coming to a large university like the UA can be daunting,” said [Name], a student from a small town participating in the Rural Scholars Program. “The program has been invaluable in providing me with the support I needed to succeed, both academically and personally.”

The UA’s efforts are not limited to programs. The university also actively engages with rural communities by hosting outreach events, partnering with local high schools, and offering virtual tours and presentations. This engagement aims to dispel myths about the university and showcase the opportunities available to rural students.

“We are committed to building bridges between the university and rural communities,” said [Name], [Title] at the UA. “We believe that by fostering a sense of belonging and providing support, we can help rural students thrive at the UA and contribute to the success of our state.”

These initiatives are showing promising results. The number of applications from rural students has increased significantly in recent years. This trend suggests that the UA’s efforts are effectively addressing the needs and concerns of these students, creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for them to pursue their educational aspirations.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
