1. Reading buddies: Offer your time and help children and teens develop their reading skills by becoming a reading buddy at your local library or school.

2. Mentorship programs: Get involved with mentoring programs that connect you with young people in need of guidance. These programs exist in every state and provide an opportunity to make a positive impact on a young person’s life.

3. Tutoring: Volunteer to tutor children and teens in subjects such as math, science, or language arts. Many schools, community centers, and after-school programs seek tutors to support students’ educational goals.

4. Youth sports coaching: If you have a passion for sports, consider coaching a youth team in your area. This not only promotes physical activity but also helps build teamwork and discipline in young athletes.

5. Animal shelters: Help children and teens develop empathy and responsibility by volunteering at an animal shelter. You can assist with feeding, cleaning, and socializing with the animals, or even organizing adoption events.

6. Environmental projects: Engage children and teens in environmental stewardship by participating in clean-up events, tree planting initiatives, or other conservation projects. This promotes a sense of responsibility towards nature and instills sustainable habits.

7. Hospital volunteering: Spend time with children and teens at hospitals by playing games, reading stories, or offering companionship. Your presence can provide comfort and support to young patients and their families during challenging times.

8. Community gardens: Join community gardening projects that involve children and teens. Teach them about sustainable agriculture, healthy eating, and the importance of a green environment.

9. Arts and crafts workshops: Organize creative activities for children and teens, such as painting, drawing, or pottery workshops. These activities foster self-expression, imagination, and artistic skills.

10. Homeless shelters: Volunteer at homeless shelters that serve families with children and teens. Assist with meal preparation, organizing donations, or providing support services to help families transition to stable housing.

11. Science fairs and STEM events: Participate in local science fairs or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) events where children and teens showcase their projects. Serve as a judge, provide feedback, or assist with organizing the event.

12. School support services: Offer your time and expertise to support schools by volunteering in the library, helping with administrative tasks, or assisting teachers in the classroom. Your contribution can make a difference in the educational experience of children and teens.

Remember, each state offers unique opportunities for volunteering with children and teens. Take the time to research local organizations, schools, and community centers to find the best fit for your interests and skills.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
