The Loss of School Librarians Is Hurting Kids (and Teachers)

School librarians play a crucial role in the education system, yet an alarming number of schools are losing their librarian positions. This loss is not only hurting students but also impacting teachers in various ways.

One of the primary functions of a school librarian is to promote a love for reading and provide guidance in literacy development. With the absence of librarians, students are missing out on valuable opportunities to discover new books, expand their knowledge, and develop critical thinking skills through reading. Librarians are trained professionals who can recommend suitable books based on students’ interests and reading abilities, helping them find the right materials to foster a lifelong love for reading.

Moreover, librarians are instrumental in teaching information literacy skills, which are essential for navigating the vast amount of information available today. They teach students how to evaluate sources, discern credible information from unreliable ones, and conduct effective research. Without librarians, students may struggle to distinguish fact from fiction and encounter difficulties in finding relevant and trustworthy resources for their projects and assignments.

Not only do students suffer from the loss of school librarians, but teachers also face significant challenges. Librarians collaborate with teachers to develop curriculum-related activities, provide resources for lesson plans, and support student learning outcomes. They can assist in finding supplementary materials, designing research projects, and integrating technology into the classroom. By leveraging their expertise, librarians lighten the workload of teachers and enhance the overall quality of education.

Furthermore, school librarians serve as mentors and provide emotional support to students. They create a safe and welcoming space where students can seek guidance, explore their interests, and discuss their concerns. Librarians are often seen as trusted figures who nurture students’ personal growth and wellbeing. Losing access to this invaluable support system can have a profound negative impact on students’ social-emotional development.

In conclusion, the loss of school librarians is detrimental to both students and teachers. Without librarians, students are deprived of crucial literacy and information literacy skills. Teachers bear the burden of compensating for the absence of librarians and face challenges in delivering high-quality education. It is imperative that policymakers recognize the importance of school librarians and invest in their positions to ensure the holistic development of students.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
