If you are hoping to attend medical school, you will have to meet several course requirements. However, when it comes to your pre-med major, the choice is up to you.

There are several pre-med majors for you to consider. A few of the most popular include biological sciences, social sciences, and physical sciences. As we will discuss in this article, there are a few other options that many medical schools recommend.

Whatever you decide to major in, you should always focus on getting the best results possible. Always remember that the subject you choose does not matter nearly as much as your overall GPA.

Biology

Biology covers a wide range of topics and sections. From studying microscopic organisms to cloning techniques, this pre-med major is incredibly interesting and extremely popular.

This option also specializes in genetics and neuroscience, giving you plenty of opportunities to find a subject that piques your interest and prepares you for the medical field.

Sociology

In short, sociology is the study of social behavior. If you decide to study this as your pre-med major, you will learn about how people and groups are structured. You will also focus on the patterns of social interactions.

This subject looks at crime, violence, genders, families, health, work, and leisure. Sociology majors are often very good at seeing the bigger picture in stressful situations. For this reason, it is an excellent pre-med major option.

Spanish

When it comes to the medical field, you will need to communicate with a variety of people. This is why studying another language is always a good option. Spanish is spoken in many countries worldwide, including the US, Spain, and throughout South America.

Spanish majors often choose to study in Spanish-speaking parts of the world. For this reason, studying this major will open plenty of doors for you in the medical field.

Statistics

Students who major in statistics will learn how to use data to solve various problems. This skill can be incredibly helpful in the medical field.

You will also learn how to use mathematics to reach logical conclusions. Probability is another major topic covered in statistics.

Concluding Thoughts

There are several excellent pre-med majors to choose from, including biology, sociology, Spanish, and statistics.

Remember that the course you decide to study does not matter nearly as much as your overall GPA. However, it is recommended that you choose a major that will be useful in the future.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
