The live event offers up to three hours of professional development for educators who are supporting students with reading challenges 

(Salt Lake City, UT) October 3, 2017 — As part of its efforts to support beginning and struggling readers, Reading Horizons is hosting an Online Dyslexia Summit on Thursday, October 12, 2017. The event will focus on strategies for teachers and parents to support students with dyslexia and other reading challenges.

“Every reader can find success in the classroom—with the right supports in place,” said Tyson Smith, the president and CEO of Reading Horizons. “The goal of this event is to help educators discover the right strategies and tools for their own classrooms so that they can make sure every student has an equal opportunity to achieve their best performance.”

The summit begins at 2 p.m. EDT, with a live Q&A with Shantell Berrett, MA, and Donell Pons, M.Ed, MAT, SPED. Using her experience as an English teacher, reading/dyslexia tutor, and mother of a child with dyslexia and dysgraphia, Berrett provides consulting support for schools across the nation. Pons is a reading and dyslexia specialist, as well as a certified dyslexia screener and consultant. She started her career in education when her youngest son was diagnosed with dyslexia, and then went on to receive master’s degrees in education and teaching from Westminster College, along with a certification in special education.

The second session, Don’t Stop the Learning: Assistive Technology in the Classroom, broadcasts at 4 p.m. EDT and features Eric Price, M.Ed., who spent several years as a teacher and administrator in Title 1 schools in the Houston, Texas, area prior to taking his current position as a middle school assistant principal in Utah. Price was identified as a struggling reader at an early age, and three of his four children have been diagnosed with dyslexia and are currently on IEPs. He has presented at regional conferences and is passionate about helping struggling readers find success in the classroom through the use of assistive technology.

The day wraps up with a 6 p.m. EDT session led by Dr. Richard Selznick, entitled Essentials for Supporting a Child with Dyslexia. Dr. Selznick is a nationally certified school psychologist, adjunct graduate school professor, university professor of pediatrics, and school consultant. He is the founder and director of the Cooper Learning Center and oversees the assessment and treatment of a broad range of learning and school-based academic and behavioral problems. He is also the author of the books The Shut-Down Learner: Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child, School Struggles: A Guide to Your Shut-Down Learner’s Success, and the recently published Dyslexia Screening: Essential Concepts for Schools & Parents.
