Overview of Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) Admissions

New York University is highly selective, which means it has a low acceptance rate. Students whose SAT/ACT scores and GPA are within the institution’s requirements have a good chance of being admitted. Applicants should complete an online application and send test scores from either the SAT or ACT and high school transcripts. Students with unique talents and accomplishments can still receive strong consideration even if their GPAs are outside of the mean range. After applying, students will receive a message from an admissions counselor about the application process’s next steps.

Admissions Data

In the 2018-19 academic year, New York University had an acceptance rate of 65%. For every 100 applicants, 65 gained admission and 35 received rejection letters. NYU’s admissions are highly selective, and successful applicants tend to have academic measures that are well over means.

SAT Requirements and Scores

The great majority of admitted NYU students have SAT scores in the top 20% of all test-takers. 50% of students scored between 490 and 660 on the evidence-based reading part of the exam, with 25% scoring at or under 650. Students in the top quartile scored at or over 660. In the math section, the median 50% of students scored between 510 and 690, with the lower 25% scoring at or under 510, and the top 25% scoring at or over 690. Your chances will be best at the upper end of these score ranges, and students who have a combined SAT score of 1490 or higher will be particularly competitive at New York University. If you compare SAT scores for top New York colleges, you’ll see that only a few highly selective institutions—Columbia, Cornell, Hamilton, and Vassar—are more selective than NYU.

ACT Requirements and Scores

New York University does not provide a breakdown of ACT scores for the math, English, and science sections of the exam, but the cumulative score data shows us that most NYU’s students are in the top 9% of test-takers. The median 50% of students scored between 20 and 29, while the bottom 25% scored at or under a 20, and the top quartile scored at or over a 29.

GPA

NYU’s Common Data Set from 2018-19 reveals that the mean GPA of all first-time, first-year students was 3.66. 41% of all entering students had a GPA of 3.75 or higher, while 28% were in the 3.5 to 3.74 area. Only 3% of applicants gained admission with a GPA under 3.0, so high grades are clearly an essential part of a successful NYU application. 100% of students ranked in the top 25% of their graduating class, and the great majority of admitted applicants are “A” students.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
