A federal initiative during which the government provides comprehensive early childhood academic learning opportunities, health services, proper feeding, and parental nurturing services for kids with less privileged backgrounds. Head Start programs cater to children between 3 and 5 years old and help all participating kids succeed. They’re required to serve kids with special needs, such as developmental and physical delays or homelessness.

Head Start programs are operated by school districts, community action agencies, and local nonprofit organizations. These programs have to follow many federal requirements. Depending on the rules in a particular state, Head Start programs may or may not be required to be licensed apart from meeting federal requirements. They promote parent engagement via regular visits to the kid’s home, regular chances for parents to volunteer in the program, along with special activities. They also connect children and families with other services in the community.

Head Start programs promote children’s development in a positive learning environment through different services. These include:

Early learning and development: Children’s preparedness for school and beyond is promoted via individualized learning experiences. Through planned and spontaneous instruction, play, and relationships with adults, children grow in different aspects of development. These include mathematics, science concepts, language and literacy skills, emotional well-being, and social skills. Early learning experiences also involve the language and cultural heritage of every child and family in relevant manners. Parents, including foster parents, grandparents, and other primary caregivers, are considered children’s first and most important teachers. Their knowledge of their kids is fundamental to each child’s individualized approach. Also, Head Start programs work in conjunction with families, school districts, and other entities to promote a smooth transition to kindergarten for every child.

Family well-being: Program services are offered to parents and families to promote family well-being and achieve family goals, such as financial security, housing stability, and continued education. Programs engage families in the development and learning of their child and support and bolster parent-child relationships.

Health: Physical development and health are important for early learning opportunities that require kids to fully experience and explore their environment. Head Start programs offer healthy and safe learning experiences indoors and outdoors. All kids receive nutritious meals and health screenings. Programs also connect families with medical, mental, and dental health services to ensure kids are getting the care and attention they need. Kids receive support for developing resiliency to cope with possible negative effects of trauma. Families also get mental health consultations focused on every child’s needs.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
