Introduction:

Repurposing an old monitor into a wall display can breathe new life into it while providing an interactive digital centerpiece for your home or office. One of the most accessible and cost-effective ways to achieve this is by using a Raspberry Pi. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to create a stunning and functional wall display using your old monitor and a Raspberry Pi.

Materials Needed:

1. Old Monitor with HDMI input

2. Raspberry Pi 3 or newer (with compatible power supply)

3. Micro SD card (8GB or higher capacity)

4. Keyboard and Mouse (for initial setup)

5. HDMI cable

6. VESA mount (optional, for mounting the monitor on the wall)

7. Internet connection

Step 1: Prepare the Raspberry Pi

Before you begin, make sure your Raspberry Pi is running up-to-date software by following these steps:

– Install the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) on the micro SD card using tools like Etcher or Raspberry Pi Imager.

– Insert the micro SD card into the Raspberry Pi and power it up.

– Follow the prompts to complete the initial setup, including connecting to your Wi-Fi network.

Step 2: Connect the Monitor and Raspberry Pi

Now that your Raspberry Pi is prepared, take these steps to connect it to the old monitor:

– Connect one end of the HDMI cable to your old monitor’s input port.

– Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to your Raspberry Pi.

– Turn on both devices, and your Raspberry Pi should display on the screen.

Step 3: Configure Display Settings

The next step is to configure your Raspberry Pi’s display settings:

– Head to “Preferences” > “Raspberry Pi Configuration” in the main menu.

– In the “Display” tab of the configuration window, adjust the resolution and aspect ratio to best fit your old monitor’s screen size.

– Save the settings and reboot the Raspberry Pi for changes to take effect.

Step 4: Choose and Install the Right Software

Pick a suitable software to turn your old monitor into a wall display. Some popular choices include DAKboard, MagicMirror², and Screenly OSE. Each offers unique features, so select one that best matches your requirements.

– DAKboard: A customizable display that can show your calendar, photos, weather, and other useful information.

– MagicMirror²: An open-source modular smart mirror platform that can be customized with various plugins.

– Screenly OSE: Open-source digital signage software mainly used for displaying images, videos, or web pages on a screen.

Follow the installation guides provided by each software for setting up on your Raspberry Pi.

Step 5 (Optional): Mount Your Wall Display

Once everything is set up and running smoothly, you can choose to mount your monitor onto a wall using a VESA mount. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safely attaching and adjusting the VESA mount.

Conclusion:

For those with an old monitor lying around, this project provides both a creative outlet and an opportunity to bring digital art or information into your living or working space. By repurposing old devices and utilizing the power of Raspberry Pi, you’ll create an eye-catching wall display that is both practical and stylish!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
