What is Missing in Modern Education?

The current education system doesn’t seem to have any shortage of complaints. Every school year appears with a fresh set of issues and complaints. With the increasing demand for modification, one can expect that the education system will also come up with fresh and effective ways of teaching targeted at producing graduates who can efficiently manage the issues of the present age. However, our present education system is deficient in some essential components that can help it become adjusted to this quickly evolving world.

Let’s try to understand three of these missing components.

1. Sentimentality

Sentimentality is one of the vital components that we don’t see in the modern education system. You can think of sentimentality as the emotive power, emotion, and the ability to feel something deeply. It’s a real and pure flow of feeling that helps the creative genius in individuals come out and motivates them to create. This is a deep appreciation of the truth that helps people tear through the layers of reality, ultimately motivating them to create. The emergence of harsh logic and scientific proof has marked the end of emotions instead of motivating students to feel. In simple words, sentimentality helps people make the transition from imagination to actions.

2. Creative Ability

Everywhere in the world, students have become excessively reliant on making use of the works created by authors that don’t have any scope for arguments anymore. Today’s students have turned down the process of questioning everything to find out the truth. They take up obsolete arguments and conventions, canonize them, and consider them the standard for real academic excellence instead of demonstrating curiosity. Creative ability has become outdated these days because of the fear of encountering the unknown. As a result, dogmatism has become the standard of present-day education.

3. Parental Aspiration

These days, parents don’t feel much interested in helping their kids receive the actual education. Instead, they’re more interested in seeing their children get high scores in exams and tests and ensuring that they get enrolled in reputable educational institutions so that they eventually become graduates and get high-paying, attractive jobs. This short-sighted perspective regards the materialist philosophy with great respect, making education to be considered merely a method to amass position, power, prestige, and success.

Essentially, the objective of education is to produce learned and knowledgeable people. Unfortunately, the excitement that appears with creative thinking, asking questions to learn, exploring something new, and more is sunk in the mire of individuals utilizing education as a transaction and a means to an end instead of a learning process.

Wrapping Up

Education shouldn’t give priority to materialism. It shouldn’t be just a method to achieve prosperity. Instead, it should act as a path, following which everyone involved in the process will achieve true enlightenment. The learning process in educational institutions should be targeted at spreading knowledge that students can practically apply to develop society.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
