Features Of High-Performing Teacher Preparation Programs

Teaching is a fulfilling endeavor, especially where the outcomes are favorable. Becoming a high-performing educator is the goal of any passionate teacher. Being passionate is only a fraction of the journey towards achieving this. Going through a rigorous and quality training program, in addition, is critical. But what are the indicators of a quality program?

There are four key aspects of high-performing teacher preparation programs that every educator should keep in mind.

  1. Administration

An institution is as good as its administration. This is the part of the institution that makes important decisions regarding the institution, such as how it is run, budgeting, student and alumni affairs as well as faculty interactions. Administrators often act on behalf of the college management. This means that an academic program cannot be successful or effective without the support of the administration.

  1. Faculty

Faculty entails all that has to do with the teaching and assessment process, including the professors and the syllabi. For a faculty to be successful, the professors should be well trained and be experts in their respective fields. Future high-performing teachers should learn from the best professionals in order to reciprocate that in the classroom. The syllabi should be relevant and comprehensive and the assessments credible.

  1. Learners

To be a good teacher, you have to be a good learner. Teaching programs should have a thorough admission process to ensure that learners are prepared and willing to undertake the tasks that await them. Teaching entails preparing the next generation of professionals and leaders, and therefore training programs should not be taken lightly.

While programs ought to be inclusive, it is critical that learners selected for teaching programs are strong in academics and possess a great degree of commitment if the intention is to produce high-performing educators. Quality learners contribute to positive outcomes in the future and are indicative of the standards of the teaching program.

  1. Progress

We live in a world where we wake up to changes in every aspect of daily life every day. Academia is no exception; the needs of learners are becoming increasingly dynamic, and educators have to make adjustments to cater to these needs. An effective academic program is one that strives to move forward, making improvements and adjustments along the way, all while making certain not to compromise on the core values and standards.

One of the ways in which a teacher preparation program can progress is through innovation. The goal of the innovation could be to create better ways of getting things done, solve problems, or even create new opportunities. Keeping up with emerging trends is important that the teachers coming out of the program are relevant and prepared to handle the next generation of learners.

These may not be the only indicators of a high-performing teacher training program but are more often than not what constitutes a good program.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
