We Talk with Kate DiCamillo About the Importance of Summer Reading

Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time for children and adults alike to dive into a good book. To discuss the importance of summer reading, we had a conversation with renowned author Kate DiCamillo, whose works include “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “The Tale of Despereaux,” and “Flora & Ulysses.”

DiCamillo has always been an advocate of reading, especially during the summer months when school is out, and children have more free time. She shared her insights on how summer reading can be both enjoyable and beneficial for readers of all ages.

Firstly, DiCamillo emphasized that summer reading helps to maintain and develop essential literacy skills. She explained, “When kids are out of school for an extended period, they can experience a slide in their reading abilities. Summer reading programs encourage them to read books on their own or with family members.”

Moreover, she pointed out that reading during leisure time can help students maintain a love for books. As she put it, “When children read for pleasure during the summer months, it helps them develop a long-term appreciation for literature. This love for books will likely stay with them throughout their lives.”

DiCamillo also shared her views on how to encourage reluctant readers to engage with books during summertime. She suggested that parents and caregivers introduce diverse book titles and topics that cater to individual interests. She added that involving children in choosing books helps to foster a sense-of-ownership and connection with the material they select.

When asked for her summer reading recommendations, DiCamillo didn’t hesitate to share her enthusiasm for some favorite titles. For younger readers, she recommended picture books like “Hurry Up!” by Adam Rex & Kate Hindley and “Swashby and the Sea” by Beth Ferry & Juana Martinez-Neal. For middle-grade readers, DiCamillo suggested, “The Beatryce Prophecy” by herself and Sophie Blackall, as well as “Amari and the Night Brothers” by B.B. Alston.

Finally, DiCamillo spoke to educators and community members about the importance of providing access to books in underserved areas. She cited the vital role that libraries play in giving children opportunities to participate in summer reading programs. She urged communities to support library initiatives that aim to promote literacy and the joys of reading during the summer break.

In essence, Kate DiCamillo’s passion for summer reading is evident in her works and her advocacy for literacy. Through concerted efforts from parents, educators, and communities alike, we can help foster a love for reading and pave the way for lifelong learners. So, let’s embrace the magic of books this summer and discover new worlds through captivating stories.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
