Calm-down jars, also known as sensory bottles or discovery bottles, are a fantastic tool for helping students regulate their emotions and promote calmness. These mesmerizing jars are not only visually appealing but also provide a soothing sensory experience. In this article, we will explore how these calm-down jars can positively influence your students’ well-being and enhance their learning environment.

Firstly, let’s understand the concept behind calm-down jars. These jars are typically filled with a combination of clear glue, glitter, water, and a few drops of food coloring. When shaken, the glitter swirls around in the liquid, creating a captivating visual effect. As students watch the glitter slowly settle at the bottom of the jar, they are encouraged to focus on their breathing and relax.

Calm-down jars can be utilized in various ways within the classroom setting. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Mindful Breaks: Encourage students to take mindful breaks when they feel overwhelmed or stressed. By spending a few minutes observing the glitter swirl and settle, students can regain their focus and improve their concentration.

2. Transition Tool: Use calm-down jars as a transition tool between activities or subjects. When students need to shift their attention from one task to another, allowing them to shake the jar and watch the glitter can help them transition smoothly without feeling rushed or disoriented.

3. Self-Regulation: Teach students self-regulation techniques by incorporating calm-down jars into your classroom’s emotional regulation strategies. Encourage students to identify their emotions and use the jars as a tool for self-calming and reflection.

4. Sensory Exploration: Incorporate calm-down jars into sensory exploration activities. Students can observe how different color combinations or types of glitter create different visual effects, promoting creativity and curiosity.

In addition to promoting relaxation and self-regulation, calm-down jars also serve as a powerful visual metaphor. When discussing emotions or behavior choices, you can use the jar as a tangible representation of emotions that may feel chaotic at times but ultimately settle. This metaphor helps students understand that emotions are temporary and can be managed with the right tools and strategies.

To maximize the effectiveness of calm-down jars, consider involving your students in the creation process. Allow them to choose the colors and types of glitter to personalize their own jars. This involvement not only provides a sense of ownership but also encourages engagement and investment in their emotional well-being.

In conclusion, calm-down jars are an excellent resource for promoting emotional regulation and creating a calm and focused learning environment. By incorporating these mesmerizing sensory tools into your classroom, you can empower your students to navigate their emotions effectively and enhance their overall well-being. So go ahead, grab some glitter, glue, and jars, and get ready to blow your students’ minds with these incredible calm-down jars!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
