The Different Types of Engineering Careers
Engineering has to do with designing and creating machines, structures, and devices. In layman’s terms, engineering is concerned with objects and structures–what makes it up and how it works.
Engineering is a highly sought-after degree because it promises a stable career with a lucrative salary. There is some element of engineering in any industry like medicine, IT, mining, and renewable energy. It is known for its emphasis on math and science.
There are many specializations in the field of engineering. There are five 5 major fields with subfields/specializations. Below are descriptions of each:
Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is said to be the oldest form of engineering. Structures like buildings, airports, roads, and bridges were designed, constructed, and maintained by civil engineers. They work in close coordination with architects to build structures that are functional and are aesthetically pleasing. Some great works of civil engineering include the Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, Great Wall of China, and Eiffel Tower.
In recent years, there has been a demand for eco-friendly structures in response to the climate crisis.
Chemical Engineering
To put it simply, chemical engineers deal with chemicals–they design, formulate and manufacture materials needed to build structures. Chemical engineers can find promising careers in food, pharmaceuticals, and fuels.
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering has to do with the development and production of devices and various mechanical systems. They develop functional products like ships, cars, and household appliances.
As with the other types of engineering, mechanical engineers are expected to have excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Electrical Engineering
One of the newest fields of engineering is electrical engineering. It came about in the 19th century when electricity was first discovered. In recent decades, it has become one of the most in-demand forms of engineering because it has to do with the designing, testing, and maintenance of devices, electrical equipment, and electronics.
Electrical engineers work with any materials that use electricity–from small items like microchips, computers, smartphones to large-scale products like generators, satellites, and powerplant.
Industrial Engineering
Industrial engineering is the brand of engineering that is applied in the business setting. By using engineering principles and best business practices, industrial engineers aim to improve productivity and quality, increase efficiency and reduce costs. They design facilities and information systems that will optimize the business.
Those with a background in industrial engineering find lucrative careers in service, entertainment, and healthcare.
What if My Math Grades Are Not Great?
In an entire industry that places so much emphasis on math and science, there is a minimum requirement to pass any engineering program. However, it is not always the ones who have the highest grades that succeed—it is those who are innovative thinkers and are persistent. It is quite a competitive field, and having the mental strength to withstand the challenges can put you above the rest.
Why You Should Consider A Career in Engineering
Those who are genuinely interested in creating and designing products and structures should give engineering a shot. A degree in engineering will arm you with the skills and know-how to make these structures. On a more practical aspect, engineering is both a broad yet specialized field that is always in-demand. There is an engineering job in any industry. Aspiring engineers can look forward to some stability in terms of career growth.
