Teaching About Race Is Good, Actually. Republicans Need to Stop Banning It.

In an era where understanding and embracing diversity is more crucial than ever, Republican-led efforts to ban teaching about race in schools are not just misguided—they’re dangerous. These bans are a step backward in our collective journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Let’s be clear: teaching about race isn’t about instilling guilt or division. It’s about equipping our children with the knowledge and empathy they need to navigate an increasingly diverse world. By learning about different racial experiences and the historical context of racial issues, students develop critical thinking skills and a broader perspective on society.

Consider this: in a globalized economy, cultural competence is a valuable skill. Companies actively seek employees who can work effectively with people from various backgrounds. By banning race education, we’re putting our children at a disadvantage in the future job market.

Moreover, teaching about race helps combat racism and discrimination. When students understand the roots of racial inequalities and the experiences of different racial groups, they’re better equipped to recognize and challenge systemic racism. This knowledge is crucial for creating a more just society.

Critics argue that teaching about race promotes division. However, the opposite is true. Ignoring racial issues doesn’t make them disappear—it allows misunderstandings and prejudices to fester. Open, honest discussions about race can actually bring people together by fostering empathy and understanding.

It’s time for Republicans to stop these misguided bans. Instead, let’s focus on developing comprehensive, age-appropriate curricula that teach about race in a nuanced and constructive manner.

As citizens, we must speak out against these bans and support educators who are committed to teaching the full spectrum of our history and society. Our children deserve an education that prepares them for the real world—not one that shies away from important truths.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
