This delightful picture book follows a Chinese American family as they prepare for and celebrate the Lunar New Year. Through colorful illustrations and simple text, children will learn about traditional decorations, special foods, and the iconic dragon dance. It’s a perfect introduction to this joyous holiday.

Activity: Create Your Own Dragon Dance

Inspired by the book, gather some friends or family members and create your own mini dragon dance. Design colorful paper dragon heads, attach them to sticks or poles, and dance together to the beat of traditional music. It’s a fun and interactive way to experience the energy and excitement of a real dragon dance!

2. “D is for Dragon Dance” by Ying Chang Compestine:

In this beautifully illustrated alphabet book, children will discover various elements of Chinese culture associated with the Lunar New Year. From zodiac animals to delicious dumplings, it’s an engaging way to explore the traditions and customs of this festive occasion.

Activity: Make Dumplings

Invite your kids to roll up their sleeves and join you in making traditional dumplings. Teach them the art of folding dumpling wrappers and let their imaginations run wild with different fillings. Not only will they learn about a popular Lunar New Year dish, but they’ll also have a hands-on cooking experience.

3. “Lanterns and Firecrackers: A Chinese New Year Story” by Jonny Zucker:

This fascinating book introduces children to the legend behind the Chinese New Year festivities. Follow Xiao Ming as he discovers the origins of lanterns and firecrackers and how they became essential parts of Lunar New Year celebrations.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
