New Christian Medical School at Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University (BYU), a private university sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is poised to revolutionize medical education with the announcement of a new Christian medical school. This groundbreaking initiative aims to integrate faith and science, shaping a new generation of physicians grounded in both rigorous medical training and a strong ethical framework informed by Christian principles.

While details are still emerging, the proposed school promises a unique curriculum that will differentiate it from traditional medical schools. Beyond the standard medical sciences, students will likely engage in courses exploring the intersection of faith, ethics, and healthcare. This could include topics like bioethics, palliative care, and the spiritual needs of patients, fostering a holistic approach to patient care that prioritizes the well-being of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

The school’s emphasis on faith is not merely a superficial addition; it’s envisioned as a core tenet shaping the entire learning environment. Faculty will likely be selected for their commitment to both medical excellence and their Christian faith, creating a supportive and faith-affirming community for students. This could foster a culture of service and compassion, encouraging students to view medicine as a calling rather than simply a profession.

The establishment of a Christian medical school at BYU is a significant step for faith-based education in the medical field. It addresses a growing need for physicians who can navigate complex ethical dilemmas with a strong moral compass and a deep understanding of the human condition. While the specifics of admissions, curriculum, and funding remain to be fully disclosed, the initiative signals a bold commitment to integrating faith and medicine, creating a potentially transformative impact on healthcare. This innovative approach could serve as a model for other faith-based institutions seeking to enhance medical education with a focus on ethical and compassionate care. The anticipated opening date and further details on the curriculum are expected to be released in the coming months.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
