College visits have a lot of significance. They show your eagerness to know about a school. It allows you to know if the school suits your interests and personality before committing your time and money to a particular school. When you visit the campus, you can get a feel of the school. Here are some tips that you can use to get the maximum benefit from a college visit.

Explore the Campus By Yourself

Besides taking the official tour of the campus, go around the place by yourself. The tour guides usually show you the college’s selling points. You may not get the complete picture if you see only the best parts of the buildings.

Take Notes and Pictures

If you are visiting several schools, you should take notes and pictures. It will enable you to compare them later. After visiting three to four schools, you may forget the details of each school. You can write down the facts and figures and also note down how you feel about the school.

Read Bulletin Boards

When you go to the academic buildings, residence halls, and student centers, make it a point to read bulletin boards over there. You can quickly get to know the things that are taking place on the campus. It will help you to know about lectures, recitals, plays, and clubs.

Attend a Class

You can visit a class and observe the students when they are participating in a classroom discussion. Make sure you call and schedule your classroom visit in advance. Visitors cannot go to a class without prior permission in most colleges.

Meet a Professor

Talk to a professor in the subject you plan to major in. You can find out about class sizes, graduation requirements, and research opportunities.

Talk to the Students

The campus guide may tell you only the best things about the school. Try to find students who can respond spontaneously and give you the exact details of what the students do in the school. You can get to know how they spend their weekend.

Go to the College’s Dining Hall

Try to get a chance to eat with the students in the dining hall. You can observe the students and find out if they are happy or stressed. You will also come to know if they give good food to the students. Some colleges offer free meal coupons to prospective students.

Stay Overnight

If you have the opportunity, spend the night on the campus. You can get a better picture of student life in the residence halls. It will help you to come into contact with more students and gain more information.

Opt for a Virtual Tour

Many colleges offer comprehensive virtual tours of the campus. They show 360-degree views of academic buildings and residence halls. Colleges also provide detailed information about the majors and a chance to interact with current faculty and students. So if you cannot go to a school physically, you can opt for a virtual tour.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
