Introduction

Gaming platforms like Steam have revolutionized the way we play and enjoy our favorite games. One of the many features that have made Steam a go-to platform for gamers is its ability to support a wide range of controllers, including the popular Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. In this article, we’ll guide you on how to connect your Joy-Cons to Steam, so you can start playing your favorite games with ease.

Step 1: Update Steam and Enable Steam Input

Before proceeding with the connection process, make sure your Steam client is updated to the latest version. Updating Steam will ensure you have access to the latest features and functionalities.

Once you’ve updated Steam, you must enable ‘Steam Input.’ This feature allows you to use gamepads, controllers, and other types of devices on your computer seamlessly. To enable ‘Steam Input,’ follow these steps:

1. Open the Steam client and click on ‘Steam’ in the top left corner

2. Select ‘Settings’

3. Click on ‘Controller’

4. Select ‘General Controller Settings.’

5. Check the box next to ‘Generic Gamepad Configuration Support.’

By enabling this option, Steam will automatically detect a variety of controller types, including your Joy-Cons.

Step 2: Pairing Your Joy-Con Controller

To connect your Joy-Con controllers to your computer:

1. Open your Windows settings

2. Click on ‘Devices’

3. Select ‘Bluetooth & other devices’

4. Now, click on ‘Add Bluetooth or other device.’

5. Choose ‘Bluetooth.’

While Windows is searching for available devices, prepare your Joy-Con by following these steps:

1. Detach the Joy-Con from your Nintendo Switch console.

2. Press and hold down the small button located between the shoulder buttons (SL and SR). This will put the Joy-Con in pairing mode.

3. Once the Joy-Con appears on the Windows Bluetooth device list, click on it to begin the pairing process.
Repeat these steps for each Joy-Con you wish to connect.

Step 3: Configuring the Joy-Cons within Steam

Even though your Joy-Cons are now connected to your computer, you still need to configure them within the Steam settings. To do this:

1. Open the Steam client and click on ‘Steam’ in the top left corner

2. Select ‘Settings’

3. Click on ‘Controller’

4. Select ‘General Controller Settings.’

5. Your connected Joy-Con should be visible under ‘Detected Controllers.’ Click on it and select ‘Define Layout.’

You can now configure your Joy-Con’s button layout according to your preferences and start
enjoying all your favorite games with your Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.

Conclusion

Connecting your Joy-Cons to Steam is simple and adds a whole new level of enjoyment to PC gaming. By following these steps, you are unlocking endless possibilities and enhancing your overall gaming experience. Have fun, and game on!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
