How to Choose the College That’s Perfect for You

Choosing a college is an important decision that can affect your future career. It is of no use just looking at the rankings while making your decision. Those colleges may not cater to your interests, talents, career goals, and be suitable for your personality. You have to keep certain things in your mind while looking for a college for yourself.

Graduation Rate

The graduation rate of a college should be high. Your goal is to enroll in a college where you have a chance to graduate successfully.

Find out how many years are required to complete a degree. You may need to spend an extra year on internship experiences in some fields.

Student to Faculty Ratio

The size of the class varies in all the colleges. The student to faculty ratio should not be high. But this aspect is not very significant. If it is high, it does not imply that students are going to be neglected by the instructors.

Financial Support

You should find out about the financial aid offered by the college. The financial support given by public and private colleges may vary a lot. The charges for private colleges may be high, but they possess more money and can offer more aid compared to public universities. You would not like to incur so much debt that you cannot pay it back.

Research Opportunities

Find out about the experiential learning opportunities that are available in the college. Ask them if they give students a chance to participate in research work and internships and whether there is an alumni network that can help when you seek a job after graduation.

Facility to Study Abroad

Good colleges offer programs where the students get a chance to travel and study in some of the best institutions abroad. Students can pursue studies in a branch campus in some other country.

Curriculum

See if the courses offered by the college match your interests and career goals. The elective courses should be exciting and useful. They should be worth the money that you are going to pay for them.

Activities

Extracurricular activities should be available. There should be clubs where you can pursue your interests with others who have similar ideas as you.

Health and Fitness

Many students put on weight because they make the wrong food choices in cafeterias. Some students undergo stress in university environments. Find out if healthy meals are offered in the dining halls, whether there are exercise facilities and a health or counseling center on the campus.

Safety

Try to find out how safe the campus is. Find out if there are frequent incidents of violence and crime. Get to know about the security measures available on the campus.

Academic Support

A college that provides sufficient academic support to the students is a better choice.

Career Support

You should choose a college that helps the students to fulfill their career aspirations. It should provide guidance and help the students who apply for internships and jobs.

Chance to Exhibit Leadership Qualities

Colleges should provide opportunities for the students to demonstrate their leadership skills.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
