Starting a new school year can be nerve-wracking for students of all ages. Whether it’s the first day of kindergarten or stepping into a new grade, feelings of anxiety and excitement are common. To help ease those first-day jitters, here are 15 activities that can help calm back-to-school nerves:

1. Morning Meditation: Begin the day with a short meditation session to promote relaxation and mindfulness. Encourage deep breathing and positive affirmations.

2. Icebreaker Games: Organize fun icebreaker games to help students get to know each other and feel more comfortable in their new surroundings.

3. Buddy System: Pair up students with a “buddy” who can provide support and companionship throughout the day. This can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and fear.

4. Classroom Tour: Take students on a guided tour of the classroom, highlighting important areas such as the restroom, library, and supply station. Familiarizing them with their surroundings can reduce anxiety.

5. Name Tags: Provide students with customizable name tags or labels. This not only helps teachers learn their names quickly but also creates a sense of belonging among the students.

6. Show and Tell: Allocate some time for students to share something special or meaningful to them. This activity helps build connections and increases confidence.

7. Team-building Activities: Engage students in team-building exercises that require collaboration and problem-solving. This encourages peer interaction and builds camaraderie.

8. Art Therapy: Set up an art station where students can express their emotions through drawing, painting, or other creative outlets. Art therapy can be incredibly soothing and therapeutic.

9. Storytelling: Invite students to share stories about their summer vacations or memorable experiences. Listening to others’ stories can help normalize nervousness and create a sense of community.

10. Mindful Breathing: Teach students different breathing techniques, such as belly breathing or square breathing, to help them manage stress or anxiety throughout the day.

11. Positive Affirmations: Create a dedicated space where students can write down positive affirmations for themselves or their classmates. Encouraging self-confidence and a supportive environment can alleviate nerves.

12. Mindful Walking: Lead students in a mindful walking exercise, where they pay attention to their footsteps and the sensations in their bodies. This brings focus to the present moment and reduces anxiety.

13. Brain Breaks: Incorporate short brain breaks throughout the day, such as stretching, jumping jacks, or dancing. These physical movements help release tension and boost mood.

14. Relaxation Corner: Designate a cozy corner in the classroom with soft cushions, stress balls, or calming toys. Students can retreat to this space when they need a moment to relax and recharge.

15. Gratitude Practice: Encourage students to share moments of gratitude either individually or as a group. Focusing on positive aspects can shift their mindset and alleviate stress.

By incorporating these “First Day Jitters” activities into your back-to-school routine, you can create a supportive and calming environment for students. Remember, a little bit of reassurance and a few engaging activities can go a long way in easing those back-to-school nerves.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
