Easy Ways To Calculate Reading Comprehension Scores

Evaluating a student’s reading fluency and giving a score to it is not as easy as it might appear. Even from the teaching side, limitations can arise that may hinder the instructor from scoring their student’s reading skills effectively. Sure, there are a few tools that can help teachers in this process. But the question arises, which one is more reliable when it comes to reading fluency?

Avoid Complex Vocabulary and Tone That Can Confuse Students

While the teacher might be good at evaluating their students, there are high chances that elementary students may not always understand the questions or comprehensions properly. This might be due to complicated phrases or that the individuals cannot point to the reading passage undertone.

Hence, their answers would be based on what they understood rather than what the reading aimed to deliver. So, the scores you give to such students might not truly reflect their comprehension skills.

Thus, the best way to avoid this and improve your students’ reading skills is to mark them after ensuring they have a general idea of what the passage is about and are familiar with the words and tone used.

Use Online Score Calculators

When it comes to grading the reading skills of high school or college students, using grade calculators is an effective way to start. You can find various calculators, from scoring CGPAs for colleges to assess the academic performance of your students. And even yourself if you are a student, whether in high school or even primary and secondary classes.

They are designed to accommodate all classes and do wonders in giving final scores and their percentages without taking much of your precious time. Every second in the life of a teacher counts, after all!

Grading Varies Based on Different Kinds of Texts

Testing and assessing students on complete comprehension is how it usually goes around. However, to ensure the score is fair and represents their reading skills on point includes a deeper evaluation. You can begin by grading on the overall text and then further breaking down the comprehension and grading the specific texts.

For instance, you can give points based on how advanced the vocabulary used was, how long it was, and if the reading text was informative or literature-based, like poetry. Judging the breakdown will help you give a compelling score by evaluating how students answer most of the questions.

Concluding Thoughts

Correctly assessing students’ reading education is a whole procedure that sounds easy but includes basic vital pointers.

Once you understand them, grading and compiling final scores becomes a simple task automatically. It all primarily depends on knowing what you as a teacher should focus on when marking grades and what things to avoid.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
