The travel landscape is continuously evolving, and as we approach 2026, innovative trends are emerging that are shaping how we plan our summer vacations. Among the most significant shifts are the rise of “coolcations” and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in travel planning. These two trends are not just passing fads; they represent a fundamental change in how travelers are seeking to escape the heat and ensure a more enjoyable experience. In this article, we will explore the 2026 summer travel trends that reflect a desire for cooler climates and smarter travel solutions, providing insights that can help you plan your next getaway.

1. The Rise of Coolcations: What Are They?

With global temperatures on the rise, the concept of “coolcations” is gaining traction among summer travelers. This term refers to vacation options that prioritize cooler climates, allowing travelers to escape the sweltering heat often experienced in the summer months. According to a recent report, search volume for coolcation-related topics has surged by 164% in 2026, indicating a significant shift in consumer preferences towards destinations that offer respite from extreme heat.

Coolcations can take many forms. From visiting high-altitude mountain towns to exploring coastal retreats where the ocean breeze keeps temperatures manageable, these destinations provide a refreshing alternative to traditional summer hotspots. Popular coolcation locations include the scenic Canadian Rockies, the lush landscapes of New Zealand, and the charming villages of Scandinavia, each presenting unique experiences that promote relaxation and adventure in cooler environments.

2. Climate Awareness in Travel: A Growing Priority

As climate change continues to dominate headlines, travelers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact. The trend toward coolcations reflects a broader desire for climate-aware travel options that align with sustainable tourism practices. According to a survey conducted by a leading travel organization, over 70% of travelers expressed interest in choosing destinations that prioritize environmental sustainability and offer eco-friendly accommodations.

This growing awareness is prompting travel companies to re-evaluate their offerings and promote destinations that are not only cooler but also emphasize ecological responsibility. Many resorts and hotels are adopting sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy sources, reducing plastic waste, and supporting local communities. Travelers can feel empowered knowing that their choices contribute to a healthier planet.

3. AI-Powered Travel Planning: The Future is Here

Another significant trend shaping the 2026 summer travel landscape is the increasing use of artificial intelligence in travel planning. AI technology is transforming how we research, plan, and book our vacations, providing personalized recommendations based on individual preferences and past behaviors. As AI becomes more sophisticated, its ability to enhance the travel experience is becoming apparent.

Travelers can now use AI-powered platforms to receive tailored suggestions for destinations, activities, and accommodations that align with their interests. For instance, AI chatbots can assist with itinerary planning, suggesting hidden gems and local experiences that travelers might otherwise overlook. With a reported 35% increase in the adoption of AI in travel planning, it’s clear that travelers are embracing this technology to streamline their vacation preparations.

4. Flexibility is Key: Adapting to Uncertainty

The unpredictability of global events, including natural disasters and pandemics, has led to a shift in how travelers approach their plans. Flexibility is now a key priority, with more individuals opting for travel options that allow for easy changes or cancellations. This trend is particularly relevant for the summer of 2026, as many travelers are seeking peace of mind while planning their vacations.

As a response to this demand, airlines and travel companies are introducing more flexible booking policies. Options such as “book now, pay later,” and free cancellations have become increasingly common. Additionally, platforms that allow users to modify reservations with minimal hassle are gaining popularity. This adaptability in travel planning reflects a growing desire to mitigate risks while still enjoying the benefits of a summer getaway.

5. Local Experiences Over Tourist Traps: The Shift in Attractions

In line with the trends of coolcations and AI-assisted planning, there is a noticeable shift towards prioritizing local experiences over traditional tourist attractions. Travelers in 2026 are more inclined to immerse themselves in the local culture, cuisine, and community events rather than flocking to overcrowded landmarks. This trend not only allows for a richer travel experience but also supports local economies.

Travelers can use AI tools to discover authentic experiences tailored to their interests. For example, instead of visiting a well-known museum, one might opt to explore a local art gallery featuring regional artists or participate in a cooking class focused on traditional dishes. This movement towards local experiences aligns with the growing interest in sustainability, as it encourages visitors to engage with their surroundings in a meaningful way. 6. Health and Wellness Travel: Prioritizing Well-being

As people become increasingly aware of the importance of mental and physical well-being, health and wellness travel is emerging as a significant trend in 2026. This travel style focuses on rejuvenation and self-care, offering options such as spa retreats, yoga getaways, and wellness-focused vacations. The desire for relaxation and stress relief has never been more evident, and travelers are actively seeking destinations that promote holistic health.

Many resorts and retreat centers are now incorporating wellness programs into their offerings, including meditation classes, nutritious meal plans, and outdoor activities designed to rejuvenate the mind and body. The integration of these wellness-focused services is making it easier for travelers to prioritize their health while still enjoying a vacation. This trend not only aligns with the concept of coolcations but also emphasizes the importance of finding balance in a hectic world.

7. Digital Nomadism: Working Remotely While Traveling

The rise of remote work has created a wave of digital nomadism, where individuals choose to travel while maintaining their professional responsibilities. This trend is reshaping the way people think about travel in 2026, as more destinations are becoming appealing to those looking to work remotely in cooler climates. Cities and towns are adapting to this influx of digital nomads by providing co-working spaces, reliable internet, and community events.

For example, locations such as Lisbon, Portugal, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, have become popular among digital nomads due to their affordable living costs, vibrant culture, and welcoming communities. This trend allows travelers to enjoy the best of both worlds: the ability to explore new places while still being productive. As technology continues to evolve, the potential for digital nomadism will likely expand, making it an integral part of the 2026 summer travel trends.

8. Budget Travel Solutions: Making Vacations Affordable

As inflation and economic uncertainty persist, budget travel is becoming increasingly important for many individuals and families. In 2026, travelers are seeking innovative ways to stretch their budgets while still enjoying memorable experiences. This trend has led to the rise of various budget travel solutions, including affordable accommodations, cost-effective transportation options, and free or low-cost activities.

Budget travelers are leveraging technology to find the best deals, using apps and websites that aggregate discounts and offer insights into budget-friendly destinations. Moreover, the trend of traveling during the off-peak season is gaining traction, allowing individuals to explore popular locations at a fraction of the cost. By prioritizing budget travel options, individuals can enjoy their summer vacations without the stress of overspending.

9. Safety and Security Measures: A New Standard

In the wake of recent global events, safety and security have become paramount concerns for travelers. As we move into 2026, ensuring a safe vacation experience is a top priority for many individuals. This trend has prompted travel companies to enhance their safety protocols, including improved sanitation practices, contactless check-ins, and comprehensive travel insurance options.

Travelers are increasingly researching the safety ratings of destinations and accommodations before making decisions. Many are opting for travel insurance policies that cover cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, the integration of technology to track health and safety updates is reshaping how travelers approach their trips. This focus on safety and security will likely shape summer travel plans as individuals prioritize their well-being while exploring new destinations.

10. Emergence of Smart Tourism: Technology at the Forefront

The concept of smart tourism is rapidly evolving and gaining traction among travelers in 2026. Smart tourism involves using technology to enhance the travel experience, making it more efficient, enjoyable, and personalized. From smart city initiatives that utilize data analytics to improve visitor experiences, to mobile applications that offer real-time updates on local events and attractions, travelers are increasingly relying on technology to guide their adventures.

For instance, many cities are implementing mobile apps that provide information about public transportation, local attractions, and even augmented reality experiences. This approach allows travelers to navigate unfamiliar environments with ease and provides opportunities for spontaneous exploration. As technology continues to advance, the potential for smart tourism to shape travel experiences will only increase.

11. Traveling in Multigenerational Groups: A Growing Trend

Another notable trend for 2026 is the rise of multigenerational travel, where families from different generations travel together to create shared experiences. This trend has gained momentum as families seek to reconnect and bond through travel, often opting for destinations that offer activities and accommodations suited for all ages. In fact, recent studies indicate that over 50% of families are planning trips that include grandparents, parents, and children alike.

Destinations that cater to multigenerational travelers are becoming increasingly popular, offering activities ranging from theme parks to nature adventures that appeal to both young and old. This trend not only allows for quality family time but also creates lasting memories, making travel a meaningful experience for everyone involved. (See: Climate and health resources.)

12. Experiential Travel: The Focus on Unique Activities

In 2026, experiential travel is gaining momentum as travelers seek unique and immersive activities that go beyond sightseeing. This trend emphasizes hands-on experiences that allow individuals to connect with local cultures and communities on a deeper level. Whether it’s participating in a traditional craft workshop, cooking classes with local chefs, or guided tours that explore the hidden gems of a destination, experiential travel is redefining how people view vacations.

Research shows that travelers are prioritizing experiences over material possessions, with 65% of individuals stating they would prefer to spend on experiences rather than things. This shift in mindset is prompting travel companies to create packages that highlight unique activities, giving travelers the opportunity to enrich their journeys.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
