Are you looking for reference apps, tools, and resources that you can use with your students? If so, we have you covered. Check out our list below. Let us know if there are any that we missed.

Class Hook- This app helps teachers find pop-culture references from movies and popular TV shows that are relevant to the educational process. Class Hook makes it easy to find media references to create teachable moments that help you grab and hold students’ attention.

Bird Song Id Reference–  Identify American birds by their songs and calls. The automated recognition system includes a library of about 241 distinct bird calls and songs. It is rated 9 over 10 by Bird Watching Magazine for being extremely accurate. This app allows you to keep an accurate diary of birds based on the work done by elite ecologists behind this technology.

Diigo– This app helps students get familiar with the process of research work. It teaches them to get information from research papers. It also allows them to bookmark sites, highlight information, add sticky notes to pages, organize references, and write comments about a web page.

iversity– iversity lets schools provide their students with course materials on the Internet. They do this by allowing faculties to set up a website for their courses and upload teaching materials, so their students to have access to it. It’s free and can be used to share observations, links, and references in research groups; and announce guest lectures, conferences, and calls for papers.

Mendeley– Mendeley is a social network that allows you to organize your documents, references, research, and papers with a quick click. You can even collaborate with other users through this software, making it your productivity hub.

Visual Thesaurus – The Visual Thesaurus is a dictionary and thesaurus that creates color-coded interactive word maps. It lets users find the precise word they are looking for, develop a better vocabulary through exposure to new but related words, master word usage by accessing definitions and example sentences, and learn to pronounce words correctly through listening to correct pronunciation recordings. The Visual Thesaurus also includes 39,000 proper nouns such as historical figures, phrases, and trademarks.

Word Hippo – Word Hippo is a one-stop website for all your word needs. It includes a dictionary, thesaurus, synonyms, antonyms, rhymes, example sentences, translations into over 80 languages, the ability to find words of different lengths based on specific letters or blends, the ability to find words in different forms (plural, past tense, present tense, etc.), and the ability to hear pronunciations. Word Hippo is particularly useful for ELL students, during writing or literacy classes, or while playing a Scrabble-type game.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
