Congratulations! If you represent a college or university that is included in this list, please collect your seal below.

Seal of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Deciding which college to attend can be a daunting task. For many, it will be the most important decision that they make in their lives. To make an informed decision, you have to consider a lot of variables, such as cost of attendance, financial aid, student/teacher ratio, academics, student life, and more. These factors will either positively or negatively impact the quality of education that you receive.

Do you want to acquire an online doctorate in psychology, but don’t know what institution you should attend? Well, if you are as ambitious as I was in my late teens, then you want to attend a top school, instead of an average or mediocre one. Fortunately, we have already done the legwork for you. To help you find the right school for your interests and goals, we’ve compiled a list of 2022’s best online doctorate in psychology programs.

What institution did we forget? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage, AK

Alaska Pacific University offers a doctor of psychology degree program, in large part, to respond to a need in the state of Alaska for additional higher-level training programs. The coursework culminates in a dissertation on a topic of individual interest and passion. This degree program also meets the educational requirements for licensure in Alaska. Past learners have gone on to obtain their license to practice psychology.

  1. Alliant International University, San Diego, CA

Alliant International University offers learners the chance to pursue a doctor of psychology in educational psychology. The class design mixes online and in-person components for an interactive, adaptable learning environment. This degree program also ends with a final project in an area of professional and individual passion.

  1. California Southern University, Irvine, CA

California Southern University offers an online applied degree program for the doctor of psychology. The degree focuses on clinical psychology skills, as opposed to research. Instead of a traditional dissertation, CSU’s coursework ends with a doctoral project focused on a topic that you are passionate about. This degree program also meets the educational requirements for licensure in California. Past learners have gone on to obtain their license to practice psychology.

  1. Capella University, Minneapolis, MN

Capella University offers a doctor of psychology with a clinical psychology specialization. The degree program centers on creating a combination of online classwork and in-person experiences to optimize the learning environment. Residencies and internships improve the skills students learn in other classwork. A dissertation concludes the coursework, but at Capella, dissertation mentors offer support and guidance during this process. The doctor of psychology degree program at Capella offers numerous chances to begin preparing learners for licensure. Practicums, internships, and residencies all offer places for learners to apply their skills in the real world. Also, Capella has a support team to guide current learners and alumni via the clinical psychology licensing process.

  1. Meridian University, Petaluma, CA

Meridian University has a doctor of psychology focused on clinical psychology. At some point during the degree program, learners are required to obtain experience in individual therapy. Core, clinical psychology and research-based classes all lead to a solid foundation for professional practice. This degree program also meets the requirements for licensure in California and meets the requirements for the California Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, following additional fieldwork.

  1. Walden University, Minneapolis, MN

Walden University has a doctor of psychology degree program in behavioral health leadership. The coursework focuses on the skills and tools necessary to improve the quality of behavioral health and mental health services. Classes integrate case studies as interactive learning tools to help learners apply the skills they learn to real-world issues. Two separate residencies also shape this degree program: an in-person consulting skills retreat and a virtual doctoral project residency, which aids the completion of a capstone class.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
