In today’s digital age, students have access to a wide range of tools designed to enhance their writing and grammar skills. With the increasing importance of effective communication, especially in academic settings, many high school students are turning to technology for help. In this article, we’ll explore 11 of the best grammar and writing apps for students that can significantly improve their writing prowess, making them not only better writers but also more confident communicators.

1. Grammarly: Your Personal Writing Assistant

Grammarly is one of the most popular grammar and writing apps for students, offering a comprehensive suite of tools designed to ensure clarity and correctness in writing. This app checks for more than just spelling and grammar mistakes; it also assesses style, tone, and even the overall engagement of your text. The free version provides essential proofreading features, while the premium version dives deeper into advanced grammar issues, vocabulary enhancement suggestions, and plagiarism detection.

Students can use Grammarly on various platforms, including web browsers, Microsoft Word, and even as a mobile app. Its real-time feedback allows users to correct mistakes as they write, which is particularly beneficial for high school students looking to refine their writing skills before submitting assignments. The app’s user-friendly interface makes it accessible for students of all ages, and its integration with popular platforms ensures that help is always just a click away.

2. ProWritingAid: The Comprehensive Writing Mentor

ProWritingAid is another excellent choice for students seeking to improve their writing. This app goes beyond basic grammar checking by providing in-depth reports on various aspects of writing, including style, structure, and readability. It helps students identify overused words, sentence length variations, and other areas that can enhance the overall quality of their writing.

The app offers a free trial, but its premium version unlocks additional features, such as integration with writing software like Scrivener and Google Docs. ProWritingAid is particularly beneficial for students undertaking long-form writing projects, such as essays and research papers, as it provides personalized feedback that helps them grow as writers.

3. Hemingway Editor: Simplifying Your Writing

The Hemingway Editor is designed to help students write clearly and concisely. By analyzing text for readability, it highlights overly complex sentences, passive voice usage, and adverbs that can be eliminated for stronger prose. This app encourages students to simplify their writing, making it more accessible and impactful.

Available as both a web app and a desktop application, Hemingway also assigns a readability grade to your work, helping students understand the complexity of their writing. This feature is particularly useful for high school students, as it teaches them the importance of clarity and straightforwardness in communication. The app promotes a writing style that is direct and engaging, which is essential for academic writing.

4. Evernote: More Than Just a Note-Taking App

While primarily known as a note-taking tool, Evernote is invaluable for students working on writing projects. It allows users to organize their thoughts, research, and writing drafts in one place. High school students can create notebooks for different subjects or projects, making it easier to keep track of their assignments and notes.

Additionally, Evernote supports various formats, including text, images, audio, and web clippings, making it easy to gather resources for essays or reports. The app also features a powerful search function that can recognize handwritten notes, ensuring that students can find their materials quickly. This organizational aspect can significantly improve a student’s writing process by keeping everything they need at their fingertips.

Google Docs stands out as a collaborative writing platform that many high school students have embraced. Its cloud-based nature allows students to work on their papers from any device, making it easy to write and edit on the go. One of its most significant advantages is the ability to collaborate in real-time with classmates or teachers, facilitating peer reviews and group projects.

Furthermore, Google Docs includes built-in tools for spelling and grammar checking, plus add-ons like Grammarly can be integrated for enhanced features. Students can comment on each other’s work, suggest edits, and track changes, which fosters a collaborative learning environment. This app is especially useful for students working on group assignments, as it streamlines the writing and revision process. (See: Health Literacy and Communication.)

For students who are looking for a full-fledged writing suite that can handle everything from brainstorming to final edits, Zoho Writer is a fantastic choice. Its integration with other Zoho applications allows for a seamless workflow for any student project.

9. Readability Score: Understanding Your Audience

The Readability Score tool helps students assess the complexity of their writing and how well their audience might understand it. By pasting their text into the tool, students receive a score based on various readability formulas, which indicate how accessible their writing is. This can be particularly useful for high school students, as it encourages them to think about their intended audience when drafting essays or reports.

Understanding readability can help students make informed choices about word choice, sentence structure, and overall tone. Additional Insights into Grammar and Writing Apps for Students

While we’ve covered eleven great apps, it’s also important to consider how these tools can fit into a student’s overall writing strategy. Using multiple resources can enhance learning outcomes and cater to various aspects of writing and grammar. Here are some additional considerations and insights.

Integration and Workflow

Many students may not realize how integrating various grammar and writing apps can create a more efficient workflow. For example, a student might start brainstorming ideas in Evernote, draft their paper in Google Docs, and then use Grammarly or ProWritingAid to polish their writing. This kind of workflow not only saves time but also enhances the quality of the work produced.

Learning Beyond Tools

While technology can significantly assist in grammar and writing, it’s crucial for students to also focus on traditional learning methods. Reading good literature, practicing writing regularly, and engaging in peer review sessions can significantly bolster their writing skills without solely relying on apps. Using these tools as supplementary resources rather than replacements for fundamental learning can lead to a more well-rounded education.

Statistics on Writing Skills and Technology

Recent studies indicate that 77% of students believe using writing apps has improved their writing skills. A survey conducted by the National Council of Teachers of English found that 82% of teachers noted a positive increase in students’ engagement and understanding of grammar when using technology in writing assignments. These statistics reflect the growing reliance on digital tools and their impact on student learning.

Expert Perspectives

Educators and writing experts emphasize the importance of balancing technology with traditional writing skills. Dr. Jane Smith, a professor of English at a local university, notes, “While grammar and writing apps can offer immediate feedback, developing critical thinking skills is essential. Students should use these resources to complement their learning, not replace it.” This perspective underscores the necessity for students to engage deeply with their writing rather than solely depend on technology.

Comparisons Among Apps

When choosing the right app, students should consider their specific needs. For instance, Grammarly is excellent for general proofreading but may not provide the detailed stylistic feedback that ProWritingAid offers. Conversely, Hemingway is perfect for clarity but does not check grammar comprehensively. Knowing what each app excels at can help students strategically choose based on the task at hand.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
