10 Idioms to Teach Kids and Use in Idiom of the Day Lessons

1. A piece of cake – Something that is very easy to do

2. Break a leg – A way of wishing someone good luck

3. Cat got your tongue? – Asking why someone is not speaking

4. A penny for your thoughts – Asking someone to share their thoughts or ideas

5. Don’t judge a book by its cover – Not judging someone or something solely based on appearance

6. Actions speak louder than words – What someone does is more important than what they say

7. Curiosity killed the cat – Being too curious can lead to trouble

8. Let the cat out of the bag – Revealing a secret or confidential information

9. Beat around the bush – Avoiding direct communication or being indirect

10. A picture is worth a thousand words – A visual representation can convey a lot of information

These idioms can be used to introduce the concept of figurative language to kids and make their language learning experience more engaging. Incorporating an “Idiom of the Day” lesson can deepen their understanding and help them apply these idioms in their daily conversations.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
