Geometric art is a creative way to explore mathematical concepts while allowing artistic expression. By integrating geometry into art, students can develop a deeper understanding of mathematical principles and enhance their spatial reasoning skills. Here are 10 geometric art explorations that can be incorporated into math learning:

1. Tessellation Art: Create tessellations using regular or irregular polygons that fit together without gaps or overlaps. Encourage students to explore different themes and patterns.

2. Geometric String Art: Use string and nails to create intricate geometric designs. Encourage students to experiment with different shapes and patterns to create visually pleasing artwork.

3. Fractal Art: Introduce students to the concept of fractals and let them explore creating fractal art using repeated geometric patterns. Discuss the self-similarity and infinite complexity of fractals.

4. Islamic Geometric Art: Explore the rich history of Islamic geometric patterns and their mathematical structures. Students can create their own Islamic-inspired designs using compasses and rulers.

5. Perspective Drawing: Teach students the principles of perspective drawing and how it relates to geometry. Have them create artworks that demonstrate their understanding of vanishing points and foreshortening.

6. Origami: Combine the art of paper folding with geometry. Students can learn different origami techniques and create geometric models such as polyhedra, repeating patterns, or geometric animals.

7. Mandala Art: Introduce students to the concept of mandalas, which are geometric designs symbolizing the universe. Students can create their own mandalas using geometric shapes and patterns.

8. Symmetry Art: Explore different types of symmetry, including reflection, rotation, and translation. Let students create symmetrical artworks using a variety of materials and techniques.

9. Kaleidoscope Art: Teach students about mirrors and their role in creating kaleidoscopic patterns. Students can design their own kaleidoscopes or create artwork inspired by these mesmerizing patterns.

10. Pixel Art: Combine math and digital art by creating pixelated designs. Students can use grids to plan and create images, emphasizing the importance of precision and accuracy in geometric patterns.

By incorporating these geometric art explorations into math learning, students can develop a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of art and mathematics. These activities not only make math concepts more engaging but also encourage creativity and critical thinking skills.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
