UHV volunteer firefighter finds calling in serving others

For many, the path to finding their true calling is a winding one. This was certainly the case for Mark Johnson, a University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) graduate who traded in his engineering career for the heat of the firehouse. Mark, now a dedicated volunteer firefighter, discovered a passion for service that ignited a fire within him.
“I always wanted to help people, but I didn’t know how,” says Mark, reflecting on his early career. “I realized that engineering wasn’t fulfilling that desire.” That realization led him to the Victoria Fire Department, where he found his calling.
While engineering provided a stable career, firefighting offered something far more meaningful: the chance to make a direct impact on others. Mark’s decision was fueled by a deep-seated desire to serve his community and offer support in moments of crisis.
“Seeing the gratitude in someone’s eyes after you’ve helped them through a difficult situation is truly rewarding,” he shares. “It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe, but it’s something I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
Mark’s journey highlights a common thread among volunteer firefighters: a dedication to serving others and making a tangible difference in their community. His story inspires others to explore avenues where they can contribute their skills and find purpose in making a positive impact on the lives of those around them.
The fire that burns within Mark is not just the heat of the flames but a passionate commitment to serving his community. As he puts it, “Being a volunteer firefighter is more than a job; it’s a calling, a way of life.” His story serves as a reminder that true fulfillment often lies not in pursuing personal ambition, but in dedicating oneself to the betterment of others.
