Recess is an important part of a child’s school day, providing them with opportunities to socialize, exercise, and have fun. While modern games and technology have their place, there’s something special about the classic old-school recess games that have been enjoyed for generations. Here are twenty timeless games that your students should be playing now:

1. Tag: A game of chase where one player is “it” and tries to tag the other players.

2. Capture the Flag: Divide the players into two teams and try to capture the opponent’s flag without getting caught.

3. Dodgeball: Players try to hit opponents with balls while avoiding getting hit themselves.

4. Four Square: A game played with a rubber ball in a four square court, where players try to keep the ball in play.

5. Kickball: Similar to baseball, players kick a ball and run to bases to score runs.

6. Hopscotch: Create a grid on the ground and hop through it, following the designated pattern.

7. Red Light, Green Light: A game where one player is the traffic light and others try to reach them without getting caught.

8. Simon Says: A game of following instructions given by the leader, but only if “Simon says” before the instruction.

9. Tug of War: Two teams pull opposite ends of a rope, trying to bring it to their side.

10. Jump Rope: Single or double dutch, jumping rope offers lots of variations and can be done alone or with friends.

11. Hide and Seek: One player counts while the others hide, and the seeker tries to find them.

12. Freeze Tag: A variation of tag where players have to freeze in place when tagged until a fellow player unfreezes them.

13. Musical Chairs: Players walk around a circle of chairs while music plays and try to find a seat when the music stops.

14. Duck, Duck, Goose: Players sit in a circle, and one person goes around tapping others saying “duck” until they choose someone to say “goose” and chase them.

15. Hot Potato: Pass a small object around a circle while music plays, and stop passing when the music stops to avoid being left holding the “hot potato”.

16. Cat’s Cradle: A game played with string looped between fingers to create various patterns.

17. Telephone: Players whisper a phrase or message down a line, and the last person says it aloud to see how it has changed.

18. Ruckus Ball: Similar to dodgeball, but the ball can be caught to save teammates from being out.

19. Marbles: Players take turns shooting marbles into a ring and try to knock out their opponent’s marbles.

20. Chain Tag: Players join hands to form a chain, and a designated person tries to break the chain by capturing someone.

By reintroducing these classic recess games, you can promote physical activity, imagination, and social interaction among your students. So put down the screens, grab a ball, and let the old-school fun begin!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
