Tips for Becoming a Better English Student

Spread the love

It may be challenging to learn the English language. But if you study and practice regularly, you can learn it enjoyably. You can enhance your reading skills and comprehension with the help of these tips.

Study Regularly

According to some estimates, it can take up to 300 or more hours to learn a new language. Experts suggest that it is better to learn and practice daily instead of trying to cram the rules of grammar within a short time. If you spend just 30 minutes every day to improve your language skills, you can learn it more effectively.

Do a Variety of Things

Do different things during a study session. Read something for twenty minutes, then listen to something in English, after that study some grammar. In this way, learning will be more fun.

Use Different Sources

Read English books and newspapers, listen to English songs and speeches, and watch TV programs and movies in English. If you do this repeatedly, you will learn the pronunciation, accent, speech patterns, and grammar more easily. Keep a pen and notepad near you and write the words that you do not know. Then look up their meanings and try to use them while talking to others.

Become Familiar with the Sounds

It may be tough to learn the pronunciation of certain words because those sounds are not present in your native language. In English, you will find that some words may have similar spelling but may have a different pronunciation. There may be some words in which one letter is not pronounced. For instance, k is a silent letter in the word knife.

Get Acquainted with Homophones

Some words have different spellings and different meanings, but their pronunciation is the same. These types of English words are known as homophones. One reason why it is tough to learn English is that there are plenty of homophones.

Learn to Use Prepositions

Words that describe position, relationships between things, duration, and direction are known as prepositions, for example, on, of, for, etc. There are many rules for using them. You have to learn them and use them frequently in your sentences. A lot of practice is needed to master them.

Play Games

You can play grammar and vocabulary games associated with whatever you study in your English class. For instance, if you learn about vacations in your English class, take out some time and think of the things you did when you went on vacation last time. Note down the words that you can use to write about the things you did.

Similarly, if you study about conjugating verbs in the past tense, think about all the things you did on the previous weekend. Note down all the verbs you can use. If you want, you can consult some reference material.

Practice Writing

It is necessary to repeat whatever you learn. You can write down all that happened during the day. You can improve your comprehension skills to a great extent by doing writing exercises.

After you gain enough practice, you can do some creative writing. For example, write a few lines about a photo that is given in a magazine, or compose a short poem in English.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
