Halloween is the perfect time for teachers to show off their love for literature and share their passion with their students. If you’re a teacher looking for a literary-inspired Halloween costume, look no further! We’ve compiled a list of the best literary Halloween costumes that are sure to impress your students and fellow teachers.

1. Miss Frizzle from “The Magic School Bus”: Channel your inner adventurous and quirky teacher with a Miss Frizzle costume. Dress up in a colorful dress, add some crazy accessories, and don’t forget to wear a wig with fiery red hair. You can even carry a prop like a toy school bus or a globe to complete the look.

2. Sherlock Holmes: Become the world’s most famous detective by dressing up as Sherlock Holmes. Wear a classic tweed suit, add a magnifying glass or a pipe as props, and don’t forget the deerstalker hat. This costume is both smart and timeless.

3. Ms. Honey from “Matilda”: If you want to embody the kind-hearted and nurturing teacher from Roald Dahl’s “Matilda,” dress up as Ms. Honey. Opt for a modest and simple outfit, like a long floral skirt or a pastel-colored dress. Complete the look with a pair of glasses and a book in hand.

4. Willy Wonka from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”: Embrace your imagination and become the eccentric candy maker, Willy Wonka. Wear a purple velvet suit, top hat, and carry a golden ticket to create an enchanting costume. You can also add some colorful candy props to enhance the character.

5. Harry Potter: Transform into the iconic wizard himself, Harry Potter. Don a black robe with the Gryffindor emblem, wear round glasses, and carry a wand. To add extra flair, paint a lightning bolt scar on your forehead. This costume is perfect for teachers who want to ignite their students’ love for reading and magic.

6. The Cat in the Hat: Bring the zany and mischievous character from Dr. Seuss to life with a Cat in the Hat costume. Wear a black and white striped jumpsuit or dress, top it off with a red and white striped hat, and don’t forget the signature red bow tie. You can even carry a small red and white umbrella as a prop.

7. Mary Poppins: Take your students on a magical adventure with a Mary Poppins costume. Dress up in a prim and proper Victorian-style outfit, complete with a long coat and a wide-brimmed hat. Carry a carpet bag and an umbrella, and you’re all set to teach your class with a touch of whimsy.

These literary Halloween costumes for teachers are not only fun and creative, but they also serve as a great conversation starter with your students. Choose one that aligns with your favorite book or character, and get ready to make your classroom come alive with literary magic this Halloween.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
