The art of giving a credible recommendation (opinion)

Recommendations are powerful. They can make or break a job application, a funding proposal, or even a social connection. While well-intentioned, a poorly crafted recommendation can do more harm than good. So, how do you ensure your recommendation carries weight and resonates with the recipient? Here’s the art of giving a credible recommendation:

1. Be Honest and Specific: Avoid generic praise. Highlight concrete examples of the individual’s skills and achievements. For example, instead of saying “John is a great communicator,” state, “John effectively communicated complex technical information to diverse audiences, leading to increased client engagement and project success.”

2. Offer Personal Insight: Share your unique perspective. Why are you recommending this person? What makes them stand out? Did they demonstrate exceptional leadership, problem-solving, or adaptability?

3. Focus on Relevant Skills: Tailor your recommendation to the specific context. If it’s for a job application, emphasize the skills listed in the job description. If it’s for a scholarship, highlight academic achievements and research contributions.

4. Be Concise and Focused: Avoid rambling or extraneous details. Keep your recommendation clear, concise, and focused on the key strengths of the individual.

5. Maintain Professionalism: Use a professional tone and avoid personal opinions or judgments. Focus on factual observations and quantifiable achievements.

6. Proofread Carefully: Errors in grammar and spelling can undermine the credibility of your recommendation. Take the time to proofread your recommendation thoroughly before submitting it.

7. Don’t Overpromise: Avoid making guarantees or claims that are not substantiated. Stick to your observations and experience with the individual.

8. Be Timely: Submit your recommendation within the deadline. A delayed recommendation can reflect poorly on your commitment to the individual.

9. Follow Up: If you’re unsure about the recommendation’s impact, follow up with the recipient to express your support and offer any additional information they may need.

By following these guidelines, you can craft a compelling recommendation that truly highlights the individual’s potential and helps them achieve their goals. Remember, a well-written recommendation is more than just words on paper – it’s a reflection of your character and professionalism.

Pitt’s continued commitment to diversity and inclusion makes it a model for other institutions seeking to create a truly welcoming and enriching campus experience for everyone.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
