Introduction: The Magic of Encanto in the Classroom

The animated film “Encanto,” produced by Disney, has captured the hearts and imaginations of audiences worldwide with its vibrant storytelling, enchanting music, and rich cultural representation. Set in the lush mountains of Colombia, the film tells the story of the Madrigal family, each member blessed with a unique magical gift, except for Mirabel, who feels out of place in her extraordinary family. Educators can harness the themes, characters, and cultural elements of “Encanto” to create engaging, interactive learning experiences for students in grades K-5. This article explores a variety of activities that incorporate the film’s messages about family, identity, and community while enhancing critical skills across various subjects.

Character Exploration: Understanding Individuality and Strengths

One of the primary themes in “Encanto” is the importance of recognizing and celebrating individuality. Each character in the film possesses a unique gift that contributes to the family dynamic. This theme can be explored through character studies and creative activities.

Character Analysis Activity:

Students can select their favorite character from the film and create a character map that details the character’s gift, personality traits, and role within the family.

  • Gift: What is the character’s magical ability?
  • Traits: What are some key personality traits?
  • Role: How does this character contribute to the family’s story?

After completing their character maps, students can present their findings to the class, fostering discussions about individuality and teamwork.

Art and Creativity: Crafting Magical Gifts

Art projects provide an excellent opportunity for students to express their creativity while connecting with the film’s themes.

Gift-Inspired Art Project:

Students can create their own magical gifts inspired by the characters from “Encanto.”

  • Materials: Construction paper, markers, glitter, and craft supplies.
  • Instructions: Each student will design a gift that represents their own personality or a skill they wish to develop. For example, a student who loves animals might create a gift that allows them to communicate with animals.

Once completed, students can share their gifts with the class, explaining their significance and how they relate to their personal experiences.

Cultural Appreciation: Exploring Colombian Heritage

“Encanto” beautifully showcases Colombian culture, from its vibrant colors to its rich traditions. Educators can use this as a springboard for cultural appreciation activities.

Cultural Research Project:

Students can work in groups to research different aspects of Colombian culture, such as music, food, and festivals.

  • Music: Explore the role of music in Colombian culture and its influence on the film’s soundtrack.
  • Food: Research traditional Colombian dishes and their significance.
  • Festivals: Learn about important Colombian holidays and celebrations.

Each group can create a presentation or poster to share their findings with the class, promoting awareness and understanding of diverse cultures.

Language Arts: Storytelling Inspired by Encanto

Storytelling is a vital skill that can be developed through activities related to “Encanto.” The film’s narrative structure offers a perfect opportunity for students to create their own stories.

Creative Writing Prompt:

Inspired by the film, students can write an original short story about a magical family or a character who discovers their unique gift.

  • Setting: Encourage students to choose a magical setting similar to the enchanted Casita.
  • Characters: Students should develop their own characters with distinct gifts and personalities.
  • Conflict: What challenges do the characters face, and how do they overcome them?

Students can share their stories with the class, promoting creativity and enhancing their writing skills.

STEM Exploration: The Science of Magic

While “Encanto” is a fantasy film, educators can incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.

Magic Garden Project:

Students can engage in a hands-on activity by creating a mini-garden inspired by the magical gifts in “Encanto.”

  • Materials: Soil, seeds, pots, and gardening tools.
  • Activity: Students will plant seeds and document their growth over time, learning about the science of plants and the importance of caring for the environment.

This project can be complemented with lessons on ecosystems, plant biology, and the role of agriculture in Colombia.

Music and Movement: Dancing to the Rhythm of Encanto

Music plays a significant role in “Encanto,” with catchy songs that convey emotions and advance the story. Incorporating music and movement into lessons can enhance student engagement.

Dance and Movement Activity:

Organize a dance party where students learn some of the choreography from the film’s songs, such as “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

  • Instructions: Break down the dance moves and teach them to the class, promoting physical activity and teamwork.
  • Reflection: After dancing, have students discuss how music and dance express feelings and tell stories.

This activity not only promotes physical health but also reinforces the connection between music and culture.

Social-Emotional Learning: Building Connections

“Encanto” emphasizes the importance of family, community, and emotional well-being. Educators can use the film to facilitate discussions and activities that promote social-emotional learning.

Feelings Chart Activity:

Create a feelings chart inspired by the characters in “Encanto” to help students identify and express their emotions.

  • Instructions: Students can draw facial expressions or use words to describe different feelings portrayed in the film.
  • Discussion: Facilitate a class discussion about how characters manage their emotions and support one another.

This activity encourages students to reflect on their feelings and develop empathy for others.

Literacy Skills: Reading Comprehension Through Encanto

To enhance reading comprehension, educators can integrate “Encanto” themed literature into their curriculum. This approach allows students to engage with texts that reflect the film’s themes.

Themed Reading List:

Curate a list of age-appropriate books that relate to the themes of family, magic, and identity.

  • Examples: “The Magic of Melwick Orchard” by Rebecca Caprara and “The Name Jar” by Yangsook Choi.
  • Activities: After reading, engage students in discussions about the characters and their journeys, encouraging critical thinking and making connections to “Encanto.”

By connecting literature to the film, students can explore narrative elements while fostering a love for reading.

Art Integration: Creating a Colorful Mural

Art can be a powerful way to make connections between “Encanto” and broader themes of community and identity. A collaborative mural project can help students express their understanding of these concepts.

Mural Project:

Students can work together to create a mural that represents the themes of “Encanto.”

  • Materials: Large paper, paints, and brushes.
  • Instructions: Each student can contribute their interpretation of a theme from the film, such as family unity or diversity.

Once the mural is completed, it can be displayed in the classroom or school, celebrating the students’ hard work and creativity.

Through these activities, educators can create a dynamic learning environment that leverages the magic of “Encanto” to inspire students across multiple disciplines. By integrating character exploration, cultural appreciation, and social-emotional learning, students can develop critical skills while enjoying the enchanting world of the Madrigal family.

Conclusion: Embracing the Magic of Learning

Incorporating “Encanto” into classroom activities for grades K-5 offers a unique opportunity to engage students in meaningful learning experiences. By exploring themes of family, identity, and emotional intelligence, educators can foster a supportive and inclusive environment that resonates with young learners. These activities not only enhance students’ academic skills but also encourage them to appreciate diverse perspectives and the importance of community.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
