Safe Indoor Recess Games for Pandemic-Era Classrooms

Introduction:

With the ongoing pandemic, indoor recess has become a new challenge for teachers and students alike. However, there are plenty of safe and enjoyable games that your class can play during indoor recess. In this article, we will explore some exciting and socially distanced games that can keep your students engaged and active while staying safe.

1. Scavenger Hunt:

A scavenger hunt is a great way to keep your students entertained during indoor recess. Create a list of items or clues that the students need to find within the classroom. Make sure to include items like pencils, erasers, or books to encourage learning and engagement. Divide the students into teams and set a time limit to add a competitive element. This game will not only keep the students occupied but also enhance their problem-solving skills.

2. Simon Says:

Simon Says is a classic game that can easily be adapted for indoor recess. Choose a student to be “Simon” and give them instructions for the rest of the class to follow. The twist is that the instructions should involve movements or actions that can be done while maintaining social distance. For example, “Simon says touch your nose with your elbow.” The last student to perform the action is out, and the game continues until there is one winner. This game promotes listening skills and physical activity without compromising safety.

3. Dance Party:

Turn indoor recess into a dance party by playing upbeat and energetic music. Encourage the students to move and groove while maintaining their designated spots or following social distancing markers. You can even teach them some fun dance routines or let them showcase their own moves. Dancing helps release energy, promotes creativity, and boosts mood, making it an excellent game choice for indoor recess.

4. Yoga or Stretching Session:

Physical activity is vital, even during indoor recess. Consider having a yoga or stretching session to help your students relax and focus. Choose simple yoga poses or stretches that can be done individually, such as the tree pose or toe-touches. Incorporate calming music and deep breathing exercises to create a calming and rejuvenating experience. Yoga and stretching help reduce stress, improve flexibility, and enhance mindfulness.

5. Board Games or Card Games:

Utilize the indoor recess time by introducing board games or card games to your students. Classic games like chess, scrabble, or UNO not only provide entertainment but also encourage strategic thinking and problem-solving. Ensure that each student has their own set of game pieces or cards to minimize contact. Rotate the games regularly to keep the students engaged and motivated.

Conclusion:

Indoor recess doesn’t have to be boring or unproductive, even during the pandemic. By incorporating these safe and enjoyable games, you can make the most out of indoor recess time and provide your class with a fun and interactive experience. Remember to prioritize safety and maintain social distancing guidelines while ensuring that every student gets a chance to participate and have fun.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
