The interactive reading curriculum was honored by the ComputED Gazette as one of the best educational software options for elementary students

(Salt Lake City, UT) April 28, 2016 – Reading Horizons, a multisensory curriculum used to rapidly increase reading skills, has been named a winner in the 22nd Annual Best Educational Software (BESSIE) Awards. Reading Horizons won “Best Remedial Reading Website” in the early elementary category.

Presented by the ComputED Gazette, the BESSIE Awards target innovative and content-rich programs and websites that provide teachers and parents with the technology to foster educational excellence. Contenders for the awards are evaluated based on academic content, technical merit, subject approach, and management system. Winners are selected from entries submitted by publishers worldwide.

“We are delighted to have Reading Horizons recognized by the BESSIE judges for educational excellence,” said Tyson Smith, the President and CEO of Reading Horizons. “This BESSIE award for Best Remedial Reading Website validates years of effort to develop software that will meet the needs of emergent and struggling readers. Our team is dedicated to providing educators and students with the best possible solutions to increase literacy skills and reading comprehension.”

Reading Horizons develops and produces direct instruction and software materials to increase literacy skills for emergent readers, struggling readers (children and adults), and English language learners through blended learning. The platform follows the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching decoding skills systematically and sequentially.

The company recently launched the latest iteration of its interactive platform, Reading Horizons Discovery® version 7. The update includes Check-Up assessments, an iPad app designed to make the program convenient for students in a 1:1 or BYOD setting, and the option for the RH Discovery Reading Assessment powered by the Lexile Framework for Reading®.

Reading Horizons Discovery fulfills all of the standards for foundational reading skills for students in K-3, as well as other standards outlined by the Common Core State Standards, and is correlated to the findings of the National Reading Panel.

The web-based software is accessible to students, teachers, and administrators from any location with an Internet connection.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
