Music Apps, Tools, and Resources That We Love

Are you looking for music apps, tools, and resources that you can use with your students? If so, we have you covered. Check out our list below. Let us know if there are any that we missed.

Blob Chorus Ear Training– This game is used in many schools nationwide to teach students how to identify pitch and music notes. Each blob in the recital sings a note; then, the king blob sings his note. The objective is to identify which blob sang the same note as the king blob. You can always increase the size of the choir if you think the game is too easy for you or your child.

Ear Cat– A gaming app that is a product of work between professional musicians and educators. It is one segment in a similar group with titles such as Rhythm Cat, Treble Cat, Bass Cat. It consists of 80 levels/stages that are aimed at developing how we perceive and interpret songs. Useful for both music amateurs and experts.

Flat– Flat is an accessible tool for creating sheet music and writing music scores online. This user-friendly music composition software gives you all the tools needed to make sheet music, either as a beginner or a professional composer. You can listen, write, share, and discover music scores on any device using your web browser, and you can invite your friends to collaborate with you in composing your music scores online. A single musical composition can be opened and edited using different devices at the same time by multiple users. Flat is not just a sheet music maker, but a community!  Thousands of modern composers and musicians join flat every day!

Jazzy 123 Learn to Count with Music– This top educational app will teach your children numbers and musical instruments in a fun and interactive manner. Your child will be able to identify numbers and tell the difference between various musical instruments and their sounds. Jazzy 123 is available in more than 10 languages, and it’s very simple and easy to use. 

Music Tech Teacher– Music Tech Teacher is a hub for music-related content for educators. It offers quizzes, games, and music theory instruction, and worksheets to promote learning and evaluation of knowledge. The app includes 140 puzzles and games about music theory, notes, composition, rhythm, instruments, composers, and more. This is all run by a nonprofit; all content is copyrighted, but it can be used within the app, but cannot be shared externally. To play the games, you need Adobe Flash or JavaScript.

GarageBand– With GarageBand ’11, you can learn 22 new “Learn to Play lessons” in the most common musical genres, and an interesting new feature known as ” How Did I Play?” The app lets you practice lessons, receive real-time feedback about any mistakes, and monitor your improvement over time. It also offers new features that help you create songs with better sounds.

Toca Band – With Toca Band, children can experiment with 16 different characters to create their own band. All types of music can be used from opera to rap. Simply put, the characters on stage and move them around to experiment with different sounds and styles. There are 48 fun sound loops that can be put together in endless combinations depending on the child’s preferences.

WURRLYedu – uses music as a gateway to teach critical life skills. It is a curated content platform with creation tools. For teachers, WURRLYedu delivers culturally relevant content, including lesson plans with suggested assignments, an extensive music catalog, video tips, and a comprehensive suite of tools that includes a learning management system and assessment tools to make music education fun, effective, and affordable. For students, WURRLYedu offers thousands of songs (all customizable in key, speed, and instrumentation) with animated timed chords and lyrics, recording tools and one touch audio/video filters, collaboration tools as well as ear training games to develop general comprehension skills.

Noteflight– This app lets you create, edit, view, share, and listen to professionally annotated music on your computer, tablet, and smartphone. Noteflight Basic allows you to keep your scores, share them with other users securely, or add them to your web pages. Noteflight Premium has additional features that enable you to create infinitely more scores, compose and listen using over 85 instruments in premiere conditions, record and score audios in real time, and print parts or entire score transcriptions. Scores can be transcribed using a MIDI device. With Noteflight, you can create score collections and share them with friends.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
