For a quarter of a century, the Mizzou Botanic Garden has been transforming the University of Missouri campus into a living masterpiece of natural beauty. As we celebrate its 25th anniversary, we reflect on the incredible journey that has turned our campus into a verdant oasis in the heart of Columbia.

Established in 1999, the Mizzou Botanic Garden began as a visionary project to enhance the campus environment. What started as a modest initiative has blossomed into a sprawling tapestry of flora that captivates students, faculty, and visitors alike. The garden’s mission to create an aesthetically pleasing and educational green space has been realized beyond its founders’ wildest dreams.

Over the past 25 years, the garden’s most notable achievement has been its remarkable expansion. From its initial footprint, the botanic garden has grown to encompass numerous areas across campus. Today, it boasts an impressive array of themed gardens, each telling its own story and offering a unique experience. The Legacy Oaks area, with its majestic trees, stands as a testament to the garden’s commitment to preserving natural heritage. Meanwhile, the vibrant Butterfly Garden has become a haven for pollinators and nature enthusiasts alike.

The impact of the Mizzou Botanic Garden on campus life cannot be overstated. It has transformed mundane walks between classes into opportunities for discovery and reflection. Students find solace in its peaceful nooks, while researchers utilize its diverse plant collections for academic studies. The garden has become an integral part of the Mizzou experience, enhancing the quality of life for the entire university community.

As we look to the future, the Mizzou Botanic Garden continues to grow and evolve. Plans for new themed areas and educational programs promise to keep the garden at the forefront of campus beautification efforts. With each passing season, it reminds us of the power of nature to inspire, educate, and bring people together.

Here’s to 25 years of growth, beauty, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead for our beloved Mizzou Botanic Garden!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
