Overview of Louisiana State University (LSU)

Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College is a public research institution situated in Baton Rouge. The institution has a large selection of 70 undergraduate and 50 graduate degree programs for students. Students are supported by a robust 20 to 1 student/faculty ratio, and professors take a personalized approach to the teaching and learning process. Outside of the classroom, students will find plenty of opportunities to engage with the campus community via many clubs and organizations.

Overview of Louisiana State University (LSU) Admissions

Louisiana State University, which accepts almost three-quarters of applicants, has a slightly selective admissions process. Students whose SAT/ACT scores and GPA are within the institution’s requirements have a good chance of being admitted. Applicants must complete an online application and send test scores from either the SAT or ACT and high school transcripts. Glowing recommendation letters can bolster your application, along with being involved with student organizations and attempting a challenging course load. Interested students should check out the university’s website, which has helpful tips and contact information for the admissions offices.

Admissions Data            

During the 2017-17 admissions phase, Louisiana State University had an acceptance rate of 74%.  For every 100 students who submitted applications, 74 students gained admission, making LSU’s admissions process somewhat competitive.

SAT Requirements and Scores

During the 2018-19 admissions phase, 12% of admitted students provided SAT scores. This admissions data reveals to us that most of LSU’s admitted students fall within the top 35% on the SAT. 50% of students admitted to LSU scored between 540 and 640 reading and writing section, while 25% scored below 540, and 25% scored over 640. 50% of admitted students scored between 530 and 650 on the math section, while 25% scored below 530, and 25% scored over 650. Applicants with a cumulative SAT score of 1290 or higher will have particularly competitive chances at LSU.

ACT Requirements and Scores

During the 2018-19 admissions phase, 88% of admitted students provided ACT scores. This admissions data reveals to us that most of LSU’s admitted students fall within the top 31% on the ACT. The median 50% of students admitted to LSU received a cumulative ACT score between 23 and 29, while 25% scored over 29, and 25% scored below 23.

GPA

In 2019, the mean high school GPA for Louisiana State University freshman was 3.43, and most admitted students had mean GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 4.0. Successful applicants have B grades primarily.

If past admission data predicts that you would be a competitive candidate for Louisiana State University, it should be easy to gain admissions to the schools below. If Louisiana State University is currently out of your reach, then you are sure to be a competitive candidate for the schools below.

Same Tier: Just As Hard to Gain Admission

If you’re a competitive candidate for Louisiana State University, you should have an equal chance of gaining admissions at these schools.

Binghamton University, Lehigh University, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Texas at Austin, University of Miami, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Washington

Reach Institutions: Gaining Admissions Will be More of a Challenge

These schools are more challenging to gain admission into than Louisiana State University. If you improve your GPA and SAT/ACT scores, you’ll be a competitive candidate.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
