How to Clean Shoes in the Washer Without Ruining Them

Introduction:

Cleaning your shoes can be a tricky task, especially when they’re covered in dirt, mud, or sweat. While using a washing machine is a convenient way to clean them, it can also damage your prized possessions if not done correctly. The good news is that there are ways to clean shoes in the washer without ruining them. In this article, we’ll discuss how you can clean your shoes effectively and safely using a washer.

Step 1: Check the Shoe’s Material

First and foremost, you need to check the material of your shoes. Not all materials are safe to put in a washing machine. Leather, suede, and shoes with adhesive gluing should be avoided as the water and agitation can break down the adhesives and damage the materials. Opt for canvas, knit, or synthetic mesh materials that are typically suitable for machine washing.

Step 2: Remove Loose Dirt and Debris

Before placing your shoes into the washing machine, remove any loose dirt or debris. Use a soft brush to scrub off any dirt on the surface of your shoes gently. If needed, remove shoelaces and insoles as well – these can be washed separately.

Step 3: Protect Your Shoes

To protect your shoes during the wash cycle, place them inside a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase. This provides an extra barrier between the shoes and washer drum, preventing scuffing or damage. You can also add other items like towels or sheets alongside your shoes to add extra cushioning during the wash cycle.

Step 4: Choose the Right Settings

Selecting proper settings on your washing machine is crucial for keeping your shoes intact. Use cold water and a delicate cycle to prevent excessive wear on your shoes. Adding gentle laundry detergent will help clean your shoes without causing too much agitation.

Step 5: Air Dry Your Shoes

Once the wash cycle is complete, remove your shoes from the washing machine and air dry them. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight or using a heater to dry them, as extreme heat can warp the shape of your shoes and weaken the materials. Instead, place your shoes in a well-ventilated area and allow them to dry naturally.

Step 6: Reassemble Your Shoes

When your shoes are completely dry, replace the insoles and lace up the shoelaces. If you removed any additional parts during the cleaning process, reattach these as well.

Conclusion:

By following these steps, you can clean your shoes in the washer without ruining them. Always check the materials, use protective layers, choose suitable settings, and allow your shoes to air dry to ensure their longevity while keeping them clean and fresh.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
