UNCF Honors Maryland Governor Wes Moore
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently celebrated Maryland Governor Wes Moore at a special gala recognizing his commitment to education and the empowerment of underserved communities. This event, held in Baltimore, gathered a diverse group of educators, community leaders, and supporters of higher education, all united by the belief that equitable access to education is a cornerstone of social justice.
Governor Moore, the first Black governor of Maryland, has made significant strides since taking office in January 2023. His policies focus on increasing educational opportunities, particularly for low-income and minority students. During his acceptance speech at the gala, Moore emphasized the transformative power of education, stating, “Education is not just a pathway to opportunity; it is a bridge to a better society. I believe in the potential of every student, and that potential should never be dictated by their zip code.”
The UNCF, which has been advocating for the education of African American students for over 75 years, presented Governor Moore with the “Champion for Education” award. This accolade recognizes his leadership in expanding access to scholarships, support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and initiatives aimed at closing the educational achievement gap.
Moore’s administration is prioritizing funding for community colleges, enhancing workforce development programs, and advocating for increased teacher salaries, which he believes are essential to attract and retain talent in the education sector.
As Governor Moore continues to advocate for equitable education policies, his leadership offers a promising vision for the future of Maryland’s students. UNCF’s recognition of his efforts serves as an inspiration, reminding us that when communities rally behind education, they can spark meaningful change that uplifts entire generations.
