Academics: To be eligible for the standard educational services certificate with a school counselor endorsement, a candidate must possess a master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The office may issue a temporary certificate upon the superintendent’s request to a candidate who meets these requirements: (1) A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and (2) 15 graduate semester hour credits of coursework from the areas below.

Necessary Courses: (1) A department-sanctioned graduate program in school counseling or (2) At least 48 graduate semester hours in the following areas: (1) counseling, (2) testing and evaluation, (3) psychology, (4) sociological foundations or a candidate who has finished a master’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university.

Is an Institutional Recommendation Needed?: Yes, Unless the candidate possesses national certification

Licensure: Pre-K-12

Assessment: None

Licensure Reciprocity: Yes, Out-of-state candidates qualifying under any form of reciprocity by the Interstate Certification Compact must meet the content area education requirements and pass the required test for issuance of a license.

Criminal Background Investigation: Yes, at the point of hire. Must be a US citizen. Candidates applying for instructional certification must pass an examination in physiology and hygiene, including the effects of narcotics and alcohol.
