If your child is having difficulties writing, you need to be creative about finding ways to encourage them. Keep reading to learn more about some unique strategies that should help.

Play With Pictures

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so they say. Look for some unique images from the internet or find some in a magazine. You can use these images to motivate your child by gluing them in a notebook and asking your child to write about them.

Express Your Thoughts

In this case, all your child needs to do is select an everyday task, such as making a sandwich or brushing their teeth. Have your child write a guide on how they would teach the task to an alien. You can act as the alien and follow the steps as the child wrote them.

The Journal Jar

A journal acts as a book in which your child can write about anything and everything. To do this, begin by washing and decorating a jar, such as a peanut butter jar or something similar. Proceed to print out or write prompts on a paper. You can now ask your child to remove a prompt per day and write something in the journal related to that topic.

Have a Family Scrapbook

You can use family scrapbooks to boost your child’s writing skills while saving good memories. Begin by creating a photo album to store memories of things you both did together. This may include ticket stubs, photos, and other unique objects.

They can start by writing the date of what you did and where you were. When they master this, they can go further by creating a more detailed summary. Do not forget to also add annoying or funny memories!

Write Me a Letter

Writing goes beyond reporting on books or telling a story. There are different avenues for your child to use their writing skills, such as getting other people to agree with them. You may also allow them to engage in discussion with you using written words.

Start by selecting a topic that you disagree about, such as bedtime. Such a letter will need quotes, facts, and logic to be reasonable. This will push your child to their creative limits.

Create an “I Can” Book

When your child begins to master the art of writing, he or she will also start mastering other skills. Creating an “I Can” book will help them keep a record of their achievements. Doing this will also encourage your child to write more.

Concluding Thoughts

Getting your child to write should not be too difficult if you follow the tips outlined here. The key is to get them out of their shell and encourage them to be more expressive with their words.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
