Are you tired of annoying insects disrupting your peaceful evenings at home or invading your backyard gatherings? Say goodbye to these pesky critters with do-it-yourself bug traps. In this article, we’ll explore three easy-to-make and environmentally friendly traps that will help you catch mosquitos, flies, and many more irritating insects.

1. DIY Mosquito Trap

Materials:

– 1 empty 2-liter plastic bottle

– 1 cup of sugar

– 1 tsp of active dry yeast

– Water

Instructions:

1. Cut the top one-third of the plastic bottle and invert it into the bottom two-thirds.

2. In a separate container, mix one cup of sugar with two cups of hot water. Once the sugar has dissolved completely, let it cool to room temperature.

3. Pour the sugar solution into the bottom part of the plastic bottle.

4. Sprinkle one teaspoon of active dry yeast on top of the solution. Do not mix it with the liquid!

5. Place the inverted top back into the bottle to create a funnel-like opening leading into the mixture.

6. Wrap the entire bottle in black tape or paper, as mosquitos are attracted to darker spaces.

7. Place your DIY mosquito trap in an area where mosquitos frequent.

2. Fruit Fly Trap

Materials:

– A small container or jar

– Plastic wrap

– Rubber band

– Apple cider vinegar

– Dish soap

Instructions:

1. Pour approximately half an inch of apple cider vinegar into your small container or jar.

2. Add a few drops of dish soap to make it difficult for fruit flies to escape once they land on the liquid surface.

3. Cover the container with plastic wrap, securing it tightly with a rubber band.

4. Poke small holes in the plastic wrap with the tip of a pen or pencil, allowing fruit flies to enter but making it difficult for them to find their way out.

5. Place your fruit fly trap near the source of the problem, such as a fruit bowl or trash can.

3. DIY Fly Tape

Materials:

– Brown paper or a paper bag

– Scissors

– Corn syrup

– Granulated sugar

– String or twine

Instructions:

1. Cut several strips of brown paper, approximately 2 inches wide and 10 inches long.

2. Poke a hole at the top of each strip and thread a piece of string or twine through it, tying a knot to create a loop for hanging.

3. In a small saucepan, heat one part corn syrup and one part granulated sugar, mixing until fully combined and the sugar has dissolved.

4. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before dipping each strip into it until well coated.

5. Hang your DIY fly tapes in areas frequented by flies, such as near windows or doors leading outside.

With these three simple DIY traps, you’ll be well on your way to reducing unwanted pests in and around your home. Say goodbye to annoying insects and hello to more peaceful days and nights!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
