Rainforests are incredibly diverse and fascinating ecosystems that house countless species of plants and animals. Introducing children to the wonders of rainforests at an early age can help foster their love for nature and conservation. To assist educators in selecting the best rainforest books for kids, we have compiled a list of highly recommended titles:

1. “The Great Kapok Tree” by Lynne Cherry

This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a man who visits the Amazon rainforest with the intention of cutting down a giant kapok tree. Through encounters with various rainforest animals, the man begins to reevaluate his decision. This heartfelt tale teaches children about the importance of preserving rainforests and respecting nature.

2. “Over in the Jungle: A Rainforest Rhyme” by Marianne Berkes

In this lively, rhyming book, children explore the rainforest while learning basic counting skills. The vibrant illustrations and engaging text make it an excellent introduction to rainforest wildlife and the interconnectedness of its inhabitants.

3. “The Umbrella” by Jan Brett

Set in the rainforest of Central America, this captivating book follows a young boy named Carlos, who finds a colorful umbrella and eagerly shares it with the diverse animals he encounters on his journey. Through stunning illustrations, readers gain insights into the vibrant rainforest ecosystem and the importance of kindness and sharing.

4. “One Day in the Tropical Rainforest” by Jean Craighead George

Perfect for older children, this informative book takes readers on a journey through a single day in the tropical rainforest. With detailed descriptions of plants, animals, and ecological interactions, this educational resource provides a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and biodiversity found in rainforests.

5. “If I Ran the Rainforest” by Bonnie Worth

Part of the popular “Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library” series, this book takes children on a rhyming adventure through the rainforest. Written in the style of Dr. Seuss, it introduces key rainforest concepts, such as stratification, plant and animal adaptations, and the impact of humans on this delicate ecosystem.

By incorporating these best rainforest books into your curriculum, educators can inspire children to appreciate and protect these invaluable ecosystems. Through engaging stories, vibrant illustrations, and educational content, these books will captivate young readers and instill a lifelong love for the wonders of the rainforest.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
