AI, Values, and the Future of Higher Education at EDUCAUSE 2024

EDUCAUSE 2024 saw a vibrant conversation around the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), human values, and the future of higher education. Attendees, ranging from academics to technology leaders, grappled with the immense potential and inherent challenges of AI in transforming learning, research, and campus operations.

The keynote address emphasized the importance of aligning AI development and deployment with core educational values. This included fostering critical thinking, ethical awareness, and responsible innovation in AI-powered learning experiences. The need to ensure equitable access to AI-driven tools and resources across diverse student populations was also highlighted.

Workshops and breakout sessions explored practical applications of AI in various domains, from personalized learning and automated grading to research data analysis and virtual assistant-driven support services. However, alongside the excitement for these applications, attendees acknowledged the potential pitfalls. Concerns were raised regarding data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential displacement of human educators.

A key takeaway from the conference was the need for a collaborative approach involving faculty, administrators, technologists, and ethicists. Building a shared understanding of AI’s potential and limitations, along with developing clear ethical guidelines, is crucial to ensure that AI empowers and enhances higher education, rather than replacing human agency.

EDUCAUSE 2024 demonstrated that the future of higher education lies in thoughtfully integrating AI into existing structures while upholding core values. By fostering open dialogue and collaborative action, institutions can navigate the complexities of AI, shaping its future to serve the needs of students, faculty, and the broader society.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
