Mars: The Red Planet

Mars, known for its reddish appearance due to iron oxide on its surface, is the fourth planet from the Sun. It orbits at an average distance of about 228 million kilometers from the Sun. While Mars is further away from the Sun than Venus, it can also come relatively close to Earth, especially during opposition, when the two planets are aligned on the same side of the Sun.

At its closest, Mars can be about 54.6 million kilometers from Earth. This proximity varies significantly due to the elliptical nature of planetary orbits.

Mercury: The Closest Planet to the Sun

While Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, it is not typically the closest to Earth. However, it’s worth noting that Mercury can sometimes be closer to Earth than Venus or Mars. This occurs when both planets are aligned on the same side of the Sun. Mercury has an average orbit of about 58 million kilometers from the Sun, and its distance from Earth can vary widely depending on the time of year.

The Variability of Distances: Orbital Mechanics at Play

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
