Overview of the Admissions Process: Navigating Your Path

The admissions process at the College of William & Mary is both competitive and holistic. The institution seeks to enroll students who not only excel academically but also demonstrate leadership potential, community engagement, and a commitment to the values of the college. Understanding the components of the application process is crucial for prospective students.

Application Types: Choosing Your Path

William & Mary offers several options for students applying for undergraduate admission:

Early Decision: Students who are certain that William & Mary is their first choice may apply through Early Decision. This option is binding, meaning that if accepted, students must attend.

Regular Decision: The Regular Decision application allows students to apply to multiple colleges, with notifications sent later in the admissions cycle.

Transfer Students: For those looking to transfer from other institutions, William & Mary has a dedicated transfer application process, which includes specific requirements and deadlines.

Application Requirements: What You Need to Submit

The application to the College of William & Mary requires several key components:

Common Application or Coalition Application: Students can apply using either of these platforms, both of which streamline the submission process.

Transcripts: Official high school transcripts must be submitted, showcasing the student’s academic performance throughout high school.

Standardized Test Scores: William & Mary has adopted a test-optional policy for applicants, allowing students to decide whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores based on their individual circumstances.

Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required, typically from teachers who can speak to the student’s academic abilities and character.

Personal Essays: The application includes personal essays that provide insight into the student’s personality, values, and aspirations.

Interview (Optional): While not required, interviews can provide an opportunity for students to share more about themselves and their interests.

Deadlines: Timing Your Application

Understanding application deadlines is crucial for prospective students. For those applying for Early Decision, the deadline typically falls in early November, with notifications sent by mid-December. Regular Decision applicants usually face a deadline in early January, with decisions released in late March. Transfer applicants should check the specific deadlines listed on the college's website, as they can vary by semester.

Academic Profile: What Makes a Competitive Applicant

The College of William & Mary looks for students who have demonstrated strong academic performance throughout their high school careers. The following elements are often considered when evaluating applicants:

Course Rigor: Students are encouraged to take challenging courses, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, which can strengthen their applications.

Standardized Test Scores: For those who choose to submit test scores, competitive SAT and ACT scores can enhance an application. However, the test-optional policy allows students to focus on other aspects of their application.

Extracurricular Activities: Involvement in clubs, sports, volunteer work, and leadership positions can set applicants apart.

Personal Qualities: The admissions committee values qualities such as resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to contribute to the campus community.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
